18" Wheel fitment without steering support bracket

I bought my 1995 C2 Cab 3 years ago and the car was fitted with 18" Tech Art wheels. It appears by the documents they have been fitted for about 13 years. While i was looking underneath the car i noticed that there is not a support bracket for the steering rack which is identified in the Technical bulletins. What are the benefits of the support bracket apart from probably preventing breakage of the steering rack. Do 18" wheels cause the front end to move slightly more than with the bracket installed?

Looks like i will have to buy a new bracket and bolts from Porsche.Any feed back would be good if someone has had a similar experience.

Hi,
Have a look at the technical articles on the forum for 993 under 18" wheels, its decided by chassis number and year.
Early numbers have to have the brace later years come with it fitted and why.
I did mine about 9 months ago as it had 17" now 18" and the bits cost around 46 pounds from Porsche, thats the bar and the bolts etc to fit the rack and takes about an hour.
You may have to just relieve one end to fit round one of the unions on the power steering.

the purpose of the support was to re-inforce the steering rack and prevent it from bending side to side under the additional loads placed on it by the 18inch wheels. The likely outcome of not using it will be rack failure through seal leaks etc. I do not think it will fail catastrophically. It's a very cheap part and worth doing though I think targas and convertibles weren't approved for 18inch wheels full stop. Many do run them though.

In my limited experience of a 1996 C2 with 18 inch 'turbo' wheels, they do
tram-line quite a bit. Most of the owners of similarly shod cars say likewise. Perhaps the price we pay for a different look and worse ride!
Haven't saved up for 4-wheel alingment yet though.
 
I have 18" wheels with cups fitted and the tramlining / wandering was very pronounced, especially on motorway, very little wandering with 17"'s fitted with SO2's, then at the end of the Oulton RS day earlier this march, I had a set of 18" Toyos 888's fitted, on the drive home very little tramlining / wandering ?? So I guess that doing a trackday didnt fix worn out suspension or alignment, so the tyre choice is pretty critical for wandering / tramlining.

BTW I have the brace fitted and have a VIN number ('95 coupe) that says no no no for 18"'s and have been running 18"'s with cups for ~15 track days a year for the last four years and no problems! Suspension not worn as had many compenents replaced (with OE RS parts) last year by Tognola.

Interesting point on tyre make, i am about to change from Pirelli to Continentals. Will see what difference it makes. The car has already had a 4 wheel geometry check plus new wish bone bushes. All is tight apart from the wondering on the motorway or very bumpy roads.

Fitted the support bracket to the steering rack and it has greatly reduced the wondering of the front end. A Must be done mod if 18'" wheels are fitted on cars which shouldn't.
