18inch Wheels/Tyres

Hi

I understand Cab's are not recommended to have 18's on them but the car I purchased yesterday has GT3 18's on them , personally I think they set the car off fine and re the handling Im no expert/track user so Ive no issue on that front but safety wise is it ok to run a Cab on 18's ?

Also the car is on Dunlop's front 225/40/ZR18 , Rears 265/35/ZR18 all good condition but Ive always been a Michelin Pilot Sport man on my 944 but so far the grip seems superb especially in the wet - and a dam sight cheaper than Michelin's - any thoughts - what do you guys run on a 993

Thanks
Chris

People say that however we have a 96 Cab which was fitted with 18" turbo alloys at the factory.... We have had no issues what so ever.. however you do get some tram-lining under hard braking... but no where nearly as bad as I get running similar 18" wheels on my 3.2...

All I would suggest is that you check they are genuine Porsche hollow wheels, and have a full alignment check

I had 18" on my last 993 and have to admit that I did not like the ride/handling characteristics of them compared to 17" wheels. If you do keep the 18" wheels remember that you must have the steering brace fitted.

I am back on Pzero's which I like and they do give good grip in both wet and dry.

Hi All,

In answer to Maurice's question - yes my car has option 408 fitted. It was included on the original sales receipt, along with the wheels....

Full spec according to the service book is:
C1B 240 373 374 408 551 567 573. Not sure which is the wheels option cos as I said, I'm getting this out of the service book rather than the actual sales receipt (which lists the options with their details as well) cos that's not in front of me right now.

Does that explain everything?!

Cheers

I have just had a set of 18 inch ET65 solid spoke Porsche Rims fitted to my 95 C2 Coupe. They have been fitted with a set of 225 Fr & 265 Rr N1 Michelin Pilots. Ride seems fine, although I think the shocks do need doing. Problem is that on cornering the tyres seem to be catching on the inside of the wheel arches. Size and spec of wheel and tyre seems correct - any ideas of the problem and solution??

The car is on standard ride height and looks a little strange at the rear, i.e too much space between top of tyre and arch - are a Set of HD Bilsteins and lowered M030 / M033 springs the order of the day?

I believe what I have is as you describe. The wheel supplier (who I know well) and is very experienced can't work it out either.

The car was handling fine and was ok on the 17 inch wheels. The main dealer is checking out at the moment, but wanted the benefit of your advice.

At the rear the back of the car looks a bit in the air - i.e the gap between the top of the tyre on the 18's and the wheel arch looks quite big, and the 18's stick out slightly beyond the arch. I am told that if there was a mix up and the wrong offset was fitted the wheels would stick out very noticably from the car.

Appreciate your advice

Craig

Hi Ruth

Yes, 408 is Technology, ie hollow spoke 18" wheels ... no, it doesn't explain everything, I wonder if there was any special paperwork to cover this departure ?

cheers, Maurice

Hi Maurice
Yeah, Adam (the real zwhitea!) explained that to me after I posted and I did feel a bit of a muppet! I thought you were suggesting that 408 was the steering brace... He tells me that he thinks that the steering brace required for 18" wheels was fitted as standard on Cabs from 1996 and therefore my car has it.... I would hope so anyway, considering it was a factory fitted wheel upgrade! Do you know if there's an option number for it?
Cheers
Ruth
