i am no expert in 356s but was offered today a 1959 356 engine, its complete but has been sitting in the corner of a garage for a while it is rumoured to run? was from a south african car it is of no use to me. but doing a favour for a friend and seeing about values (long story short he took engine in lieu of a debt) anybody any idea about value and what sort of market there is for this? also anybody interested in it i can pass any numbers on

value depends on a number of factors

1) whether it is complete with ancillaries, dynamo etc
2) whether it turns over
3) engine type - 60hp 75hp

Core engines with little known history go for £1000-£1500 and upwards (depending how much someone wants one!)

yes its still for sale i am trying to find out some history and indeed what it actually is before a price can be decided. hopefully someone can identify it from these pics, the engine number starts with a P followed by a star then 5 numbers then another star, its complete except for a couple of nuts and bolts and pluglead. it turns over by hand but still has plenty of compression. and i was again assured it did run. i do have to sell it so all offers considered

They look like Zenith carbs as fitted to 'Normal' engines & the flywheel looks to be the 180mm version - both of which would tally with your original statement that it is a '59 engine.

If that is the case, the engine number would be in the format :

P 7XXXX

If not, the first digit of the engine number will help to identify the engine.

True, it's not very nice. I doubt they'll sell it for that money though.
The engines may be rare but if you're going to just buy one this is the one your least likely to use (unless it's original to the car).
Bought one of these a couple of months ago to use as spares for £500 as well.

like i said in my original post i was trying to sell the engine for a friend, he has now posted it on ebay, not me. i thought it would be better for me (as a PCGB member) to try and sell it to someone who wants one for a 356 rather than advertise it and it end up in a beetle. as for bottom line i freely admitted i had no clue as to value or even if it was worth anything at all. I have no doubt that there are cheaper ones on the market and also more expensive as well its all down to how much someone will pay
