A 1971 LHD 2.2S sold at Bonhams auctions yesterday
It was restored (£10,000) in 2003 and had covered only 9,000 miles since. It has fantastic original recaro sports interior and was genuinely extremely nice. Big history and was mechanically excellent.

My question is what are the values of these cars? I realise that 2.4S are rapidly increasing but do the other S follow suit.

I did a little research before I left and found one RHD 2.2s advertised for £29,000 and a fully restored 2.2S LHD in Germany for a whopping £45,000.

I was slightly surprised to see it actually meet and pass its reserve and sell for £15,500.

Any Views?



 
I had a look at these cars a couple of months back and if the car was as described I think £15.5 was a steal. A friend recently sold a bit of a shed for £10k.

Nice cars and a great engine. Were you not tempted?

The best air-cooled 911s will always be sought after, and the rarer and more interesting, the higher the prices they will command - providing they are in first class order.

Prices achieved at a top auction, such as Bonham's, should be a fair reflection of the market.

It's £9K since a restoration 7 years ago in the US. Worryingly the £9K include 'sill repairs' . . . and you'd have thought that the headlights would have been changed over to RHD (the indicator lens are wrong as well[;)])

Saying that, if it's solid, £15,500 is cheap IMHO. Suppose it depends on who's there on the day.


 
Yes I agree about the car not being 'just been restored' but it was in very good condition, better than 99% of cars you would go and see in the classifieds. Total with premium was about £18,000. Is it that this is the 'proper' value for these cars rather than the over optimistic valuations of some dealers/owners?

I bid to £14,500 (£17,000) but that was my limit as I would have only bought it for some summer fun.

Makes me wonder if £45,000 for a 'just been restored' example on mobile.de is just someone having a bit of a laugh...
 
£18K is nearer to mark . . . but still low (if condition was that good).

£45K . . . is too much (although that might have been the cost of the resto).

It is my favourite S engine. I have owned a great blood orange 2.4S (ABW something, often in PP), but always preferred the 2.2S. The high compression engine is such a joy to rev! A much undervalued car in my view.
 
Why the question...are u selling one soon on ebay? You can't fault me for asking this....but your question stinks of a retail property developer. You know these cars...you know the value.
 
Hi. Does anyone know anything about this car. Looks like it needs some tidying from the pictures but that seems very keenly priced for a 2.2S. I'm wondering what the catch is - is the car non-std, non-original or is it just likely to need a lot of work to make it really good?

Does anyone know the seller - Bespoke Cars of Chelsea Harbour?

I saw the Chelsea Harbour car a couple of weeks ago - it had only just gone up for sale. There are quite a few spots of rust on the car (quite a bit of rust on the bonnet and a few spots elsewhere). It needed new batteries so didn't hear it running - it should be running now though. Didn't interest me but might be a worthwhile project car for somebody else.

The dealer picked me up from local tube and took me to where the car is stored - seemed genuine enough but could say no more than that. He's a one man band but can't be doing too badly as my "taxi" for the evening was his Aston Martin Vantage.
 
Hello everyone,
I am new to the club and the forum but not new to 911s. I bought the Bonhams (ex R.Atkinson) 2.2S. I can only say the car is fantastic, interior pristine, really strong engine and rebuilt gearbox without typical 901 synchro worries. The invoices are from the last two years. I really don´t care much about the car being over or under priced as I bought it to add to my small collection of classics and for the joy of driving an early S. And that it does extremely well. Very happy with my purchase.

The Chelsea Harbour car is now in my workshop, and yes it does have some issues but will make a lovely car:

Maubert, nice buy, it did look like a very nice example, I was tempted to have another few bids but retrained myself, It make a nice change to know a private buyer ended up with it rather than a dealer that would have put a 5K mark up on it.

I looked at the Chelsea Harbour car but could see at least £10K to be spent, Nick I hope you gave less than the bottom figure he quoted to me...[;)]

Mani, I didn't a penny on the car, a customer bought it on my recommendation. It did look quite nice from 10 feet, but it needs (and will have) over £12K spent on it.

Oh I see, yes I have looked at your website now, is the £12K still for the 'tidy up' that you state? It will look stunning when back in original silver though.

Mauberts car at £18k looks pretty good value now...
