1971 911T restoration

Hi, I'm looking for someone to complete a restoration on this. I'm just South of Sheffield and ideally would like someone local, but would look at anywhere within reason. Needs bare metal re-spray, electrical overhaul, finish interior etc... Car was imported in '96 from California. Has had top end rebuild, carb rebuild etc... mechanically sound.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I know Dorset couldn't be considered close to Sheffield under normal circumstances, but I can highly recommend Canford Classics for early 911 restorations. Take a look on the ddk and early 911 registry forums for examples of their work, or better still pay them a visit. www.canfordclassics.co.uk
 
Thank you for the responses. I did find a local specialist, who, after a lengthy delay, has informed me that it needs too much work to be economically viable. Which may be so. The shell is fine, and the engine has been restored and now runs, but there is still a lot to be done. I will contact both of the above for a further opinion. Rgds Jason.
 
Try Chartwells in Notts. They did the OPC Leics resto 911 for the national competition last year. Repairs were very extensive and the results outstanding. www.chartwells.net
 
Hi. Much depends on how 'proper' you want the restoration to be. A lot of the panels you get these days from Porsche are not correct for a 71 car as they tend to be post 73 or 3.2 panels and therefore will need modifying before fitting to be correct. This takes old fashioned metal working skills and early panel knowledge rather than simply removing and replacing panels and is one of the reasons restoration costs can be so high on the early cars. If you do want to go down the authentic route you will need to use one of the well known early car specialists. Ian.
 
I used Colin Belton and his partner Marc Cowles at Ninemeister Warrington for my 2.4S. I'm collecting it on Monday next after leaving it with them in March 2012 and lots of money later. Early car are worth spending money on, for the simple reason they dont make them anymore and also if YOU do not do it correctly then you are wasting your money. I hope to post photos here next week on the result.
 
Thanks for all the replies. An update, some background. My best friend imported this car years ago, had various different people do bits on it, never managed to get it on the road. Eventually it fell into my possession for the princely sum of £15k. Some of the work that has been done isn't great. I decided to spend the money and restore it. It is not a financially motivated project, meaning if I end up spending more than it's actually worth I don't care. I'm also not precious about originality to the "nth" degree so to speak, i.e. if a stainless tank is preferable due to corrosion issues etc.. then that's what I'll do, Boxster brakes and a cherry bomb I won't.... I've no intention of modifying it if that makes sense. I spent 3 months chasing round some of the people recommended above, even offering to ship the car to their site to get a full appraisal. This got nowhere. In the interim I moved from Sheffield to Guildford and took the car with me. My new neighbour is a mechanic. 60 years old, what I'd call old school, very knowledgeable. I talked it through with him and his knowledge on the car, model variants, engines etc.. is detailed. I visited his garage where he was working on, amongst other things a Jaguar SS100. He has a lot of restoration experience across a broad range of classics. Clearly he's not a well known early year specialist, but I trust his ability, and his garage is near me so I can see the progress, which is important seeing as I wasted months trying to get someone to look at it.

So far the car has been stripped and the bodywork dipped to allow for a closer look at the body shell. A number of panels are being replaced, inner/outer wing, sills, headlamp mount, front panel. I intend to return the car to it's original white, to keep the original brakes and refurbish them. The carbs have been sent off to be reconditioned by a specialist. I'll be spending some time trawling round the forum looking for related topics, but given my comments about not being financially motivated, I'd welcome any bits of advice that you think relevant. Will post pictures when time allows.

Old fashioned metal work skills was absolutely spot on... Progressing slowly and steadily. Floor pan is going on soon then sent back to be dipped, zinc'd and primed.

 
Looks quite a good shell comapred to most :)

if you need any more tips etc on your restoration , etc etc , have a good look on the resto threads section off DDK. Quite a few going through the same process as you at the moment and its always facinating to see the detail :)

Hi, bodywork is now complete. Took a year! Shell sent to be dipped and primed. Will post more photos. Couple of questions, what's the best way of restoring the window frames? Secondly, any recommendations on someone to do the paintwork? Any help greatly appreciated.
