1972 2.4E Engine TLC

Hi folks. My 1972 2.4E is smoking a wee bit coming off of high revs. Looks like the engine is in need of some TLC. Does anyone know of good cost effective engine specialists that could do some work for me. I stay near Aberdeen. Also what is the usual oil pressure?

Firstly you need to check the oil level correctly. The engine must be at full operating temperature and idling. Check the dipstick to make sure it is more than halfway between the lower and upper marks. The oil pressure should be 60 psi at 4000 rpm when hot. The oil should be mineral 20/50, not synthetic.

What colour is the smoke? If black or blue, don't worry, that is fuel. If white on the overrun then you need the valve guides looking at. I am not aware of any specialists (and I would not trust an old 911 to anyone apart from a specialist in early 911s) in your area, the closest is probably Mike Bainbridge in Kendal, Cumbria.
 
Thanks for the reply Nick. It is blue smoke if the car has been sitting and not run for a while and then started and then after that only when coming off high revs. The oil pressure is reading (on the guage??) 25.

I would guess that the valve guides need to be replaced and the cylinder heads serviced. It is possible you could get by with just a top end rebuild. That will almost certainly cure the majority of the blue smoke when you accelerate, they almost always smoke a little when starting up but clear quickly. As for the oil pressure being low, my 240000 mile engine had no perceivable oil pressure at tickover but had 2 bar at 2000 rpm and 3+ bar at 3000 rpm which is about 70 mph. You could improve the oil pressure by fittind the 930 turbo rocker shaft oil supply adapter as I have done. This restricts the oil supply to the spray feed to the rocker shafts because they have a smaller hole through them, part number 901-105-361-01-M157. The resulting back pressure brings the oil pressure up a treat. I suggest that the bottom end of your engine is still OK if the oil has been changed regularly, the crankshaft is a very robust part of the engine.
 
A lot of people run old 911s on modern synthetic oils and wonder why they have high oil consumption, low oil pressure and drips under car. It should have mineral 20/50 oil, there is no need for anything else. Hot oil pressure then should be 60 psi at 4,000 rpm. As Robin says, zero pressure at tickover is normal.
 
Thanks Nick & Robin for your replies. I see if I can get my hands on some 20W 50 mineral oil. It's not usually readily available in the shops.
I've contacted Mick Bainbridge about the engine and he thinks it may be best to get the engine taken out myself and freighted down to him. I suppose it's the joys of staying near Aberdeen!!!
 
If you want a closer shop, I can recommend my service outlet, Two Plus Two Ltd. in Brierly Hill (just outside of Dudley). Chris and David worked for Old Swinford Motors, the second Porsche dealership in the country, and Chris worked in the Harley Davidson 934 at Le Mans in 1984/5? They sorted my car out, are rebuilding a 2,7RS for a friend and have done a number of others as well.
