1976/7 924 instrument lights

Does anybody know where fuse 19 is situated on a 1976/7 924?-Haynes manual shows it in the Instrument lighting circuit current path 22.
On my friends car(see previous posts) there is a peculiar "half & half" black pin connector in the lightswitch loom but the wire colours don't match Haynes.
Can't find any no on it.

Having fitted the new 4 wire headlamp motor, the newer lightswitch patched in the looms, the only thing I can't fix at the moment is the instrument lighting although have checked OK,all continuities.

Have even stripped the new switch to correct the rheostat wiper contact (that was hell with 9 tiny springs to nearly lose) but still no lights![&o]

I assume you've checked the secondary fuse 'panel'?
Otherwise the next connector after the fuse is T6b which is helpfully described as 'behind the instrument panel . . .
Lack of good earth connection maybe?

Vince-what secondary fuse panel?Didn't know there was one in the standard 924? Both our "S's" have them.
This '76 924 seems to just have the main 1-15 fuse board inc relays some of which carry fuses(identifiable on the current flow diags) with some funny clear plastic linear connectors of whichcertain ones do have a no moulded into them ie 16 is one.

Yes have already been dealing with the earth connections & will be checking this aspect when I remove the centre console next time (also to enable a replacement carpet to be fitted.
Thanks for your suggestions-very welcome.

There isn't a secondary fuse panel in early 924's, came in about 79 IIRC

Explains why my car has one and his one doesn't [;)] . . . . . so I suppose it's back to hunting for inline fuses?

Yes ,Vince-I've taken to studying the wiring diagrams in my evenings-sad I know but necessary in the circumstances[&o]
They can be very blurred & difficult to enlarge -some give a pin no for these multipin connectors ,others don't & there are so many of these 6 pin ones I don't know whether some are the same one or the same legend in a different place-oh the joy of Porsche!

It's also a shame that no matter who you ask, nobody can source the 76/77 model wiring diagram with points /condenser distributor

Can you take an NVQ in Porsche current flow diagrams,I wonder?[8|]

Bear in mind that anything in the Haynes 924 manual is a) written for the US market and therefore LH drive and full of odd US only requirements, and b) subject to the usual caveat that everything written needs to be treated with caution!

I agree Stan but so far most things I've come across in the car relate well to the book ,the wiring diagrams & the official Porsche Workshop Manual

Colin, I've sent you a PM.

I've replied Vince -more evening joy[:)]
Got the replacement front carpet in place on Thursday-looks much better & my friend is well pleased then spent some time checking out the white flat nylon 6 wire connector which tucks under the dash & seems to feed much of the steering wheel section of the instrument panel-the funny offset black fused connector fed from the light switch is one of the 6 feed wires but couldn't get a live feed yet although the black wire was live with both ign & light switch on.Ran out of time so will now be studying diagrams to see what's what.
This coming week hope to get to grips with the centre instrument set which my friend had removed & there appear to 3 spurious wires-a red that's permanently live & 2 brown obviously earth wires-here's hoping![8|]

Well,I must have got my wires crossed[:D]--checked the newer lightswitch necessary for the later 4 wire headlamp motor for continuity across terminals 58a/58b & there isn't any with the switch in the sidelamp position-a sudden thought made me turn to 1979 Onwards wiring diagram where the instrument lamp rheostat is shown on a separate current track with no internal link in the switch & fitting the old switch in sidelamp position gave steering wheel instrument illumination-this old switch won't work the headlamp motor but has had an external wire link soldered onto terminals 58/58a .

After next weeks family holiday will have to sort out a new live feed to fuse 19,the odd "half & half " black fused connector .Some progress!

Well sorted the steering wheel instrument lights today-just put a link between terminal 58 wire & 58b wire at the plug together multistrip connectors I used to graft the new light switch into the existing loom. All those lights now work after replacing several pigmy bulbs in the Tacho,et alia.

Still got to re-assemble the central panel but again got most lights to work once 3 blown bulbs replaced -thanks again for the assistance ,Vince,Still needs some connections to complete the circuits,however-Query---Does the heater panel have lighting using -total internal reflection system or other -can't see anything that does this?

Cheers

Colin.

Have now solved the heater illumination problem-behind the central console just above the heater position are 2 split plastic sockets with sprung metal encircling clips on their ends-these sockets have slots in them allowing light to shine downwards into 2 plastic prisms mounted ,one at each end of the heater fascia plastic trim, when in the correct position.
Only noticed these when looking at the console moulding prior to refitting-problem had been that I couldn't find 2 matching lampholders in the assorted clump of existing connectors other than the 3 for voltmeter, clock & oil pressure gauge, which my friend had labelled when he dismantled the console.
Now realise that these 2 others were missing from the wiring -latest position is that now all instrument lamps work apart from 1 lampholder ,the last in the series wiring where the earth is via the gauge & not a dedicated earth wire.It looks like the lamp contact/s in this OE fitting need checking as my test lamp works when connected in series but not this socket when earthed to the chassis.
My friend got 2 small plastic lampholders off ebay c/w pygmy bulbs which I shaved down/filed to fit the console sockets

All lamps now work-fiddled with the last non- working lampholder ,adjusted the 6 small brass contacts therein until got reliable working order.Centre console & instrument pod now refitted & all working-just got to refit lightswitch, then front seats & free the fuel distributor metering valve -again! always seems to stick upwards -we haven't started the engine for months now .

Front seats now refitted & engine starts-fuel distributor metering valve although seemingly stuck up ,returned to contact position on the airflow meter hinged arm once fuel pump running-phew!.

Engine started but couldn't get it hot running in friends garage because of fumes (garage built into house) & had run out of time .Next visit-was raining so put replacement hatch rams on,sorted the screenwipers but washer pump was seized.
Never stripped one before but came apart relatively easily by removing the 4 small screws that hold the "sandwich" together, needed a Stanley knife to split the backing plate away revealing the problem.
Having not been used for 16+ years -with no water therein, lime deposits had stuck everything together.

Good spray of WD 40 type jollop enabled me to free the 2 small pump gears & scrape the lime deposited off their faces .
There is 1 plastic gear meshing with 1 brass/bronze gear .Had to also re-surface the backplate ,also brass/bronze by rubbing on some wet & dry on a piece of flat glass using brasso as a combined lubricant/ctting compound.
Re-assembled using a little vaseline & bingo ,it works really well-saved possibly £40.

Our friendly fellow R18 member & register Director is to lend me his exhaust gas analyser so I can check the mixture settings but hope to get it really hot next visit outside & see how it runs before an MOT is booked

Just about getting there
