hi i have just brought my selfe a 1978 924 , i have a few things that i need to deside about , i am geting the feeling that this car is one of the more rare ones beinf a 78 and having 4 stud wheels , its a 2.0 it looks like a audi 80 lump , i need to deside wether to repaint it , if so wether to keep the origanal coulor , or chose a new one , the seets and dash are in 9/10 condition , quite amasing for a 30 year old car , also i have a lot of eletrical problems the back lights just dont do anything , the headlight switch has been bodged , the front spost dont work , also the timing out , douse any one have any timing info for this for unleaded fule , or dose it have to be 4*

I'm not sure about rare but I think less people can be bothered trying to keep an early not fully galvanised one on the road.

As for re-painting, I would always go for the original colour - however I would find out all the problems first before making a decision. Particularly any body rot in the usual places. Other things to check are the fuel lines which run under the car and rust; hot starting problems; rot under the battery etc. Have a search through the forum posts and you'll find the problems.

I know the Haynes manual for the 924 gets a lot of stick but I think its a useful starting point if you are keeping the car.

All the electrical issues don't sound good but are maybe down to bad earthing. The loom between the starter / alternator / battery often fails where it is near the exhaust.

I've used unleaded on my 2.0 924 without any problems.
 
All U.K. 924s were four stud wheels unless they had the M474 option of getrag dog leg box and four wheel disc brakes. Only the Turbo and other higher performance incarnations had five stud wheels. If its a five speeder, you must have one of the first five speed boxes.

I believe the 78 model had contact breaker ignition. Find the 10 deg before tdc mark on the flywheel. Check to see that the rotor arm is pointing toward No1 cylinder segment in the cap. Set the correct points gap, then slacken the clamp and rotate the distributor body clockwise a tiny bit so the points close. Insert a 0.0015" feeler gauge and rotate the 'strib anticlockwise until the feeler is just released.. Snug up the clamp but do not fully tighten. Start-up and advance the body for highest tickover rpm and then retard to drop the revs by about 25 rpm. If that isn't close, I'm a dutchman. Many 924 owners run on unleaded without problems. If it pinks then retard the igntion some more. If you run it on 99 octane unleaded pinking should not be an issue.
 
hi it is a 5 speed , if its got points that could be part the problrm that im having , its kiking a lot of hc's out , but i think its ignitian rather than the mecanical fule injection playing gamec , ill go have a look later tonight

ok douse any one no what the couloer is , as for the ignition system its eletronic pointess system , i dont think the turbo front end is orignal ok thanks for looking

Your car is a right mixture. The chrome trim indicates 1978 but the breakerless igntion didn't arrive until 1980. Fair play if someone has wired it all in and made it work. Does the fuel pump run, or for that matter the engine? The reason I ask is that the safety circuit for the fuel pump relay is wired differently for both types of ignition and if yours has been changed over this little gem might have been missed. You should have a conection on the fuel metering unit.
The rectangular mirrors are also unusual as is the rear spoiler.
 
intresting ,hears a pic of the ignition system , yes it starts and rund and drives , it looks like a bosh system , you said the spoiler and mirrors are strange , why . ta stu
