1978 fuel filler cap

I have a 1978 924 (with the external fuel filler cap). I've just broken the lock (I think) - it just spins now and I can't unscrew it to fill up. Before I break it to get it off and put some fuel in, does anyone now if replacemets are available or, even better, and ideas if what I can do to get it off without breaking it? All suggestions/commiserations gratefully received. Thanks. Simon.

Has the key broken in the lock or does the key just not operate the lock?

If still in the lock, you may be able to fish the bit out and get a new key cut.

Otherwise try some WD40 into the lock and leave for a while to see if it frees the mechanism.

The key is fine, it's the lock that's broken - or some part of the mechanism anyway. The key turns in the lock, but whatever position it's in the filler cap just spins round, so there's no purchase to unscrew it. I have now sourced a replacement one from Porch-apart - but as for getting the old one out I think I'll just have to destroy it bit by bit ...

I've had a look at my filler and the threaded bit is a single pressing which is held to the locking mechanism/black bit by a circlip on the underside of that black bit that turns.

The key should turn to the left to lock the two parts together so you can remove it and turn to the right to freewheel.

If you can't pick the lock to get the two parts to lock together, you may be able to prise off the little chrome cap with the spring loaded shutter and get into the mechanism.

Have a look at "Tech Tip. Lock barrels - 14/12/2007" by Muddy on this forum . . . . which may help

[:)] Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. I prised off the silver lock cover and lifted out the sprung slider ... but couldn't get any further. With nothing to lose I simply pulled at the black knurled fuel cap ... which pulled off fairly easily, at which point the whole lock mechanism fell to pieces - it had completely shattered inside. However, that just left me with the threaded pressing which I could grip with a large pipe wrench and unscrew without a problem. I then simply screwed in the new fuel cap I had ordered from Porch-apart. All sorted.
