1980 924 Ignition Coil

I am having a problem finding the correct coil for my 1980 924. All the listing on the net and via my local parts shops all seem to miss out the year 1980? I am assuming this is just an oversight on the model listing all sites seem to use. The old one looks like it has been there since the day it left the factory and all of the sticker are now not readable. Therefore difficult to cross ref. Would like to think a 1979 or 1981 coil would be OK. Can anyone guide me on this one?

can't think of any great differences between the engines in 79/80/81 so I would assume any coil would be OK, but I'm no expert. Have you tried asking Max Schenker at Frazerpart http://www.frazerpart.com/index.html If anyone will know, Max will.

The 79-81 period marked the change from points ignition to electronic for the 2.0l engine. The parts book for 1979 gives 059.905.105.B while the parts book for 1985 gives 046.905.105 for both up to 1980 and 1981 on. These look like VW numbers to me? I think I got mine, a Lucas, from Halfords without worrying about possible differences - it's worked OK for several years . . . ;-)
 
Thanks for the info. This is my first 924. Having now sorted out most things on my 996 I thought I would venture into the world of front engine Porsche. Mine has electronic ign so will now be wiser when ordering. Should that make any difference. Very much appreciate your info. Steve

046.905.105 is available from Berlyn at http://partsforporsche.co.uk/coil-924-81-p-871.html?sort=3a&page=2 you can always give them a ring to check before ordering. Do you actually need to change it? (also don't forget the dangerous voltages with electronic ignition)
 
That may be true, and there is an alternative for the 944 which is apparently becoming more popular... the trouble is I can't keep up with the PCGB forum, never mind half-a-dozen different ones, so wouldn't we all be better off sticking together rather than splintering?
 
Hi guys, Thanks for all of the above. Have now had more time to work on the 924. Well lets just say some of the wires had seen better days. It looks like some one in the past has been playing with some of the wiring. So have removed all the non "factory" bits. Let me list what I have done so far and maybe I can request your thoughts on what to do next. 1/ Replaced the wires from the alternator to starter motor. These has no insulation left on them as this crumbled when I checked them. 2/ Fitted the new coil. Now I get a much better spark at all the plugs. Checked them all out of the engine resting on the engine. Leads, dis cap and rotor arm look to be almost new. 3/ Renewed / cleaned all the connection just in case. 4/ Both fuel pumps work. 5/ Fuel is getting to the cylinders. Fuel mist is being blown out of the plug holes with the plugs removed. 6/ Battery is good. I have also another battery again fully charged and have jumped the two when trying to start. 7/ I have fresh super unleaded fuel in the tank. 8/ Have tried a small advance adjustment on the distributor. As on some old cars I have had this has helped to kick things off. The old girl is trying to catch but will not run. I am running out of options. And the old trick of towing round the block is not an option as the car is an auto. Any thoughts would be most welcome Cheers Steve
 
Have you actually checked the camshaft timing -ie the cast on mark on the cam cover with the rather small notch on the camshaft pulley & the notch on the crankshaft pulley & then the position of the distributor/rotor arm /1st cylinder?
 
Hi, Thanks always a good plan to go back to basics. Checked all the timing marks and all good. Still would not start. After a bit more head scratching I though I would check through the fuel system again. To cut to the chase it was the trunking on top of the CIS not sitting correctly and making a good seal. It looked all ok from the front and it was not until I removed it that you could see it had not been connected correctly in the past. I then checked all the other connections. Cleaned and made sure all were seated and the seals air tight. Bingo. After as bit of rough running to start with all now seems to run as it should. There is an invoice for some work being done on the fuel system in the recent past. Therefore I assumed this would be OK. Note to self. Check and re-check even what a professional has done in the past. Thanks and hope my findings will be of use to others. Cheers Steve
