1980 sc elec speeedo connections

The workshop manual diagramme has the following wire connections
2 wires RED/BLUE & RED/BLACK @ +12 (gauge)
2 wires WHITE/RED & BLACK/BROWN @"A" (gauge)
1 wire BROWN/RED @ 31B (gauge)
2 wires BROWN & BROWN/RED @ -
The other 3 single wires are illumination.
side marker indicator wht/grn exterior light system
illumination x two blk/blu interior light system
Not how you wanted the information but you might be able to sort it out by deduction.
Where did you get the gauge repaired?
Following a lead by Bones I have sent Speedometer gears.com an E mail for spare gears to repair my trip odometer but as yet that have not replied.

I had him send over the gears for my speedo last year. A careful hand is needed when replacing the gears but it can be done easy enough.
When removing the old gears be careful and count the teeth on the original (I forgot to do this so had a bit of an issue in deciding the correct tooth count to get). Let me know how many teeth you end up with.

I have posted a reply on the "has anybody heard of this before" but as a short update I would be happy to write up this work once I have completed the repair.
Progress so far.
I have removed the speedo and the front ring holding on the glass face. I have removed the cover.
The broken gear with teeth missing is easily seen, it has 20 teeth and has a smaller gear in the centre and is yellow/brown in colour, it is the one driven by the worm/motor drive.
At the moment I am trying to remove the speedo arm, the data sheet I am looking at (albeit for a 993) says it should pull off but at the moment I cant remove it ?. On the other thread I have asked if anybody has removed the speedo arm before to please let me know how it came off.
I have sent an E-mail to the states ref sobeUK thread for availability of spare gears

Also when you did your repair did you remove the speedo needle?
The Pelican parts proceedure Bones refers to says do not remove the speedo needle or you will need to calibrate the gauge. Although the 993 proceedure you posted removed the needle?
Having studied my gauge I dont think it will come apart enough to change the gear without removing the speedo needle.

If you look at the last thread pic of the needle I reckon you could lever it off with two tiny flat blades or with something you make to act as a puller. Possibly twist it off, proceed with caution I think! []

Since my last post I have concluded you need to remove the needle to get the assembly apart to remove the gear. As I did not have a spare gear and I had the speedo in bits on the bench with the sun out as you can imagine the car was not happy sitting in the garage. So I came up with a repair idea, I have drilled the centre of the broken teeth with a 0.7mm pilot hole followed by a 1mm drill ( about 5mm deep) almost to the centre of the shaft and areldited into each of 5 holes 1mm diameter brass pins cut off to the diameter of the spur gear. Each pin is about 6 or 7 mm long so there is a good engagement into the soft gear, the gear is made from what can be described as rubber. I wonder what the thought process lead to this type of material selection?
However I have the speedo back in the car and you guessed it I am now recking up the miles again, I have done a 20 mile trip and all is working well. The torque needed to turn the gear is nothing so the broken teeth must be being broken when you zero the gauge, anyway that my conclusion.
I have been in contact with Jeff Caplan of Odometer Gears Ltd and am just about to buy a new gear for $29 all up and when I have more time I will replace the repaired gear.
I have photo's of the repaired gear which I did in situe but I dont know how to post them here so if you can explain I will post the photos.
Incidentally the gear is a double spur the outer has 20 teeth and the inner smaller gear has 30 teeth so when you drill into the gear it's thicker and more robust inside the diameter of the 30 tooth gear. The photos show this clearly as the gear is transparent and you can see the brass pin engagement.

I called Jeff of speedo gears last night and ordered my new gear, this guy is great he said if any boby has any question to just call him up. Jeff is a friendly guy and has a great knowledge he is willing to share with the lads. I will upload his phone details later.
Anyway he unlocked the secret of how to remove the speedo needle.
You turn the needle to max speed ( i.e.Clockwise) and hit the stop which is in the mechanism , you put your thump and first finger under the centre boss and keep turning clockwise lifting slightly, you then let the needle return to zero i.e. fully anticlockwise and hit the internal stop and repeat by turning anticlockwise further and lifting a little.
This process is repeated i.e. back and forth until the needle comes off.
When you replace the needle it is pushed on and turned a little as you push, to ensure the needle is at zero you use the same proceedure as removal to adjust the position.
The needle is basically held on with what I call a spring sleeve.

Great to see you found how to remove the needle. I do have a tech article which states exactly how. I thought I had posted it somewhere here. Will check at home again and maybe upload it in the tech areas.

Jeff is a great guy and today I have just received my new gear to complete my repair. At the moment my hands on brass pin repair is still working OK so I can pick the right time to fit the new part.

I have just received my new spur gear from Jeff, I E mailed him and said that it was a different material, he said the original was made from Urethane soaded in oil, his comment was
"it was always going to fail eventually"
So I guess Jeff will be kept buisy for quite a while making gears for SC's and all Porsche that use Urethane gears. The new gear is a grey colour and stiff like airfix model kit plastic.
