1980's Sell! Sell! Sell!

Talking to a chap today at a local classic car meet who has a 1989 SSE Targa (amongst other cars) He says it had 12 owners in 9 months shortly after purchase.

Out of interest, he contacted the original dealer to try and explain this and was told that the car was being bought and sold by owners (some who never saw it) as a speculative traded investment.

No reason to disbelieve him, but not heard of this before - wondered if any of you have heard of this happening in the late eighties.

Suppose the 3.2's were coming to the end of production in 1989 so might be feasible.

 
Yep, See if you can find papers from the day. I saw a copy of Sunday times
from that era where these cars were offered for sale new at list+++++ prices.

So you could imagine a group of people thinking they were investing until the buble burst.
 
Yes I heard this many times. My car had a similar history. Imagine its the 80's[8|]

Someone in the city orders a 3.2 carrera. When they go to collect the car from the dealer they see a 3.2 Supersport in the showroom and its a kinda eureka moment, ' I've ordered Olive Oyl went I should have ordered Marilyn Monroe! ' [:eek:]
Well typical of the time this gent wont settle for less than the SSE but when the salesman says the SSE is awaiting its new owner. The guy tells the salesman to get on the phone and offer him 5k more than he paid for it. This supposedly happened many times resulting in cars never leaving the showroom and running up more owners than mileage[&:]

I also guess that none of these city types would go to the dealership to order or spec a car. The phone call would go along the lines.
I want a Porsche. Yes sir and the colour? Well they only come in one colour don't they? Guards Red? And the specification sir?
One with the tales whale, you know the big bit on the boot. OK sir would you like to come down and see the cars and options prior to me making an order, no fear the city gent replies, I'm to busy making money to leave my desk! :ROFLMAO:

Its also interesting to look at the pricing of the Standard narrow bodied 3.2 the Supersport and the 930 turbo. You will soon see why so few Supersports were ordered!

 
He did say the sales were driven by the cliche city 80's yuppie type - car is blue though - love to see it - he's retired hardly uses it and it only has 40k mileage - told him about Althorp, but says he cant make it - if its in good nick - bet it would be pushing £100k if it came up at Hexagon or similar.
 
yes I heard this with mine ...when I contacted ALL the previos owners...not all got back to me ( PROBALY MOVED OR PASSED AWAY ) but the first 3 said the same to me

 
That was a very short-lived 'boom and bust'.

The market started to rise most significantly in 1989, but by mid-90 it had peaked and was starting to decline - although cars were still being traded. A lot of people got their fingers burnt, and many dealers went out of business.

Word of warning though - a lot of the Porsches being 'traded' at that time were reputedly running around with disconnected speedos.

Let's be honest though, a fart would be up at £100k at Hexagon. They bought several cars from a local dealer and immediately doubled the price!

A car from one of our members end up there, sold for n times more than they paid and nothing had changed.

You know what they say about a fool and his money! Still nice work if you can get it..[:D]

My car a 1987 3,2 Targa sport with a host of factory fitted options was bought by a Chinese guy for his son while he was at Oxford but was used by AFN @foundry Lane as a demo
until 08/08/88 . The reason being 8 is a lucky number for the Chinese
