Hi guys, my name sean and I'm a fairly new to the club
i bought a 1982 944 automatic, the car sat for 5years and there's a long story to it which is a bit long to tell, but anyway the car came up in auction and I took a chance on it as I've always wanted one , the car is in good condition except for the interior back seat , I had hoped doing to usual things it would start and it would be a cosmetic job for me to do at my leisure and enjoy it , I did get it started and it run for a few mins , now it won't start although it seems to be trying but dies right away, im looking to know is there anyone in Biceste/arncott area that would come and have a look at the car for me and let me know what to do as I am completely stuck, if anyone would be willing to come and have a look and advise me I would greatly appreciate it .regards sean

Hi Sean,

Copy this to the 944 forum - you'll probably find someone local, or they might well be able to walk you through a diagnosis.

I'm assuming you've checked the DME relay? That's first port of call with any 944 that's having issues! I'd also recommend changing the timing belt before running it, as they have a 4-year maximum lifespan and a failure is catastrophic.

Nice to see an '82 car getting some attention. Too many of the early 944s have been lost now!

Hi Sean, and welcome to the Club. I'm sure someone knowledgeable will be along soon, but meanwhile:

If the car has stood for 5yrs and you're trying to get it to run on old unleaded it may just be that...this is a problem that dogs people with motor mowers, left over the winter with a full tank. Unleaded petrol goes off in time,,,something to do with the volatiles? Easier to drain the tank on a mower, I suppose, but drain and then a gallon of fresh petrol might do the trick. Worth trying Shell V Power, too...less ethanol (5%) to dissolve components in the fuel system. Car goes better on it too...as it should, at that price!

Interesting comment in Octane recently...a well known dealer in Ferrari F40s commented that, as they're often stashed and not used (madness), when they're run up on old fuel before sale, valve damage is often the result!!

Thanks guys I've checked the relay and even hot wired it to get the Pump going I've got a new one changed the pump the filter the plugs drained the tank etc, I smelled some burning i think I've tried everything I've been told and need someone who knows what they are doing before I do it more harm than good, the car seems pretty rare , it was imported from Stuttgart in1982 I've got all the Porsche history from Germany as well as uk , it's only 80k on the clock and the guy that owned it was a collector but he sadly passed away while the car was in storage, it's had been very well looked after , so I definitly think it's worth restoring, but im stuck at the moment, I will try get the msg on a different part of the fourm to see if anyone is local to me .
thanks again sean.

Hi Sean.
Seems like you have tired the obvious bit so far.
You are part for R31 and we have an event in Bicester this Sunday 20th Aug in Garth Park. In support of Garth Daytime Services for adults with learning difficulties.
All Porache owners are invited to display your Porsche at the Classic & Performance Show which is being held at historic Garth Park, Bicester. Set in 9 acres of parkland and formal gardens, Garth House is a former hunting lodge built in the early 19th Century and is the ideal backdrop for what promises to be a superb day out for Porsche enthusiasts and their families. Might be worth popping down and make you self known and see if anyone thwre can help. Here is a link to the event
