1984 944 B Reg - Query

New member
I wonder if anyone can help.
I have been offered a 944 as mentioned in the subject.
Would anyone have an idea as to how much i should offer?
The scenario - It is white in colour, has the black wheels, it has 25500 miles on the clock. It has been sitting since 1998.
It most likely hasnt been stated in all that time. The battery is flat. Where is the battery - and also how do you open the bonnet. I was unable to find and latches. I did find the electric boot switch.
The owner left the country a long time ago and has recently said that he wants to sell the car.
How easy is it to get spares? Is it costly?
The front left looks like it has been repaired as the paint is cracking off, looks like a little bit of filler, but not too badly damaged. May need to replace the front bumper.

I'd appreciate any help asap.
I have to make a decision quickly.

Many thanks

Pedro

Personally this sounds like a neglected car that 'could' cost an awful lot of money to get up and running. Many of the rubber seals could be perished, the brakes will no doubt need refurbishing and the belts will need changing straight away as they will be at least 6 years old if they were changed back in '98. There could well be an underlying problem which is the reason why this car was laid up back then, so unless the owner has some very believable reasons I would walk away

Please 'grass up' this criminal owner and we will send the 944 police round to lock 'em up for abandoning such a car for the past 6 years []

thanks Diver 944,

it was left at a friends place as the owner, his friend, was going to the Gulf for work/business. the owner had intended to keep/use or export the car to the Gulf.
he is very wealthy from what i have heard and just wrote this car and another one (Old Mercedes) off.

i may pick it up for next to nothing, [:)]

do you know any place i can take the car to to get the work done - cant afford to take it to a dealer[:(]

thanks

From what you describe I would think you should allow £1500- £2000 for, belt change, replace water pump, all fluids, overhaul the brakes and getting the car running. £1K might give you a nice looking car. £500 for seals, struts, new mats etc.

Granted the car has low mileage but do you realy want to spend £3.5K minimum on an unknown quantity. If the man gave you the car you will probably spend more on it than it is worth, but then we all do that. [;)]

An old car is and old car, Porsches are better than most but it is still a 20 year old car. To enjoy it you must realy want it and relish the thought of bringing it back to life.

I am in North London.
N10

I am now stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I will have to give it a good think.

thanks
hopefully more peeps will reply to the original post.

I am in N16. You must be Muswell Hill area?? Maybe I could take a look with you. Not that I am an expert.

I'm in N14, if your thinking off buying it, it would be wise to get a Porsche independent to look at it.

An interesting car Pedro. You have obviously spent a lot on your current "ride", if that's the correct street term [;)]. Are you sure you want the added agro of Porsche ownership?

I get the impression you wouldn't be satisfied with the Lux in standard form and would be looking to mod' it. Whilst Turbos are seldom left alone Lux and S2's are limitted in what ecconomic and effective modifications can be undertaken. If you want a 944 (and as I've said previously you do realy have to want one to love it) you might be better off spending more in the first place and getting a Turbot.

...as I've said previously you do really have to want one to love it.

Actually I bought mine on a complete whim when I saw it for an unbelievable price in Autotrader. I was scanning the site for an Audi for a friend... wasn't even in the market for a car and had not previously considered a 944, but once I drove it I had to have it! [8D]

hey guys thanks for the offer.

Andriko and flamingeye
i am in Muswell Hill, next to the old Coppets Wood Hospital.
can you let me have your contact no's
i really would appreciate some expert opinions - i cant even find the bonnet latch/opener

thanks for your comments
my current car is the only one in the UK
so it is very special
the Porsche has been offered to me for next to nothing
I would prob get it on the road, clean it up, enjoy it for a few months then sell it.
I am getting married in Jan and the Mrs has already started moaning about the time and money i'm spending on the car.
I dont intend on doing any mods to the car - keeping it bog standard.

I have been checking on the insurance!!!!! its a killer
who are you all insured with?

thanks
Pedro

you can get a classic policy - I'm 26 and I'm currently paying about £400 fully comp on each of mine; prices were about twice as much before I hit 25. Try using the Forum's Search facility , search for 'Insurance'; there are lots of recommendations from people.
