Good morning.
My 944 barn find, spins over, but no spark at the plugs, so I'm going work back through the distributor, coil etc. my question is does this model have the crankshaft sensor that delivers the spark?
Any other tips would be most welcome.
Many thanks
Andrew

Yes the 944 does have crank sensors (two in fact).

However have you checked other things? If not I would look for certain aspects in this order:

1) Does the DME relay work (as a diagnosis procedure you can make a 3 wire 'jumper' to remove the DME to see whether it is at fault
2) Is there a spark from the king lead? - Some of the cheaper rotor arms seem to give issues on these (or the carbon spring is missing from the centre).
3) Does the tacho needle bounce when turning over (this is one way to see whether the crankshaft sensors are working, but not a sure fire one :).

Before looking into the sensors those would be the couple of basic checks I would do first, especially with how often the DME relays can fail (albeit not quite as much as they did before).

Far more likely to be the connectors at the back of the cam tower than the sensors themselves, and its far more likely to be the DME relay (which controls power for the ECU and the fuel pump, potentially causing ignition or fuel problems) than either of those.

The fuel pressure regulator is now a common failure point, too.

Google "Clark's Garage" and follow Clark Fletchers guides.
