1986 944 electrical problem

Blower, windscreen wipers and electric windows have stopped working -- anyone have any ideas? Fuses are ok, checked power to the relays, one had but one didn't (I think). Thought it might be the earthing point (M3 I think) but the electric seats work and this uses the same earth I believe.

I'd completely forgotten that! My current Turbo did it when I bought it. I think all I replaced was the switch though as it's OK now and it is still on the same key. The switch part was only 25 quid or so as well I think.

I did try wiggling the ignition/key, Tony, but no joy. Fen, when you said you repaced the switch which part of the ignition are you talking about? I have a spare lock set but would rather stay with the current lock setup if I can.

OK, got it from the PET. I see the ignition switch is seperate from the lock barrel; I'll dig out the spare I have and give it a go.

I mean the actual bit that makes the electrical connections and it turned by the lock part.

I didn't fit it personally, but as I recall from seeing it there is a flat blade that is turned by the lock barrel and this blade engages in a slot in the ignition switch itself and turns it, making the necessary contacts.

Having said that if backing the key off carefully after starting the car doesn't solve your problem then it may well not be the switch as your symptom is slightly different to mine. You do have to back it off rather than jiggle it though - turn it back gently and slowly and see if the electrical items start to work before the engine is shut off; with mine they did.

yep, what Fen said ^^^^

I guess if the switch is ok yet symptoms are similar it could be an alarm/immobiliser issue if one is fitted.

That was my other thought... Given that my ignition position on mine doesn't seem to be material looks like it's back to finding an autoelectrician.
