1988 944s water on drivers side floor.

hi

just had a good look inside and found some gaffa tape holding the carpet down on my recent purchase, it was quite well hidden actually but under the carpet there is blue paper towel that was wet through. I have removed this now, but clearly water is entering the car, it does have a sunroof but there is no obvious point of entry.

is this a usual trait of the 944 with sunroof? if so what is the best way to stop it?

thanks in advance.

James

The sunroof has 4 small drain holes in the gutter at each corner. They connect to small rubber tubes that run down the A pillar by the windscreen and the C pillar by the hatchback. Take out the sunroof and with a small jug tip water down each hole. At the front it should run into a small collection area at the back of the engine bay and then through another drain onto the foor.

If either of these are blocked it can cause a puddle which will eventually find its way inside the car. Carefully unblock with plastic wire from a Flymo Strimmer or similar. If the rubber tubes have come loose you are going to have to remove interior trim to re-attach them. Also clear any leaves or debris from the collection area at the back of the engine bay.

Another possibility is you have bad rust or a hole in the sill / foowell area that is letting in water []

next question, how do you take the sunroof off? [&:]

Did the car not come with a handbook ? you are going to need one. If you are not careful its easy to break some of the tiny fragile plastic parts that raise and lower your sunroof.
from memory you need to put your ignition key on the auxillary position (one before ignition lights) then operate the sunroof switch. The sunroof won't lift but the locking mechanism will operate freeing up the sunroof. You need to unclip the two clips at front of sunroof then the sunroof should simply lift and slide out to therear.
Essential that you put the sunroof back in exactly the reverse order .
If any of this is wrong I'm sure someone will correct.

next time you clean the car or it rains check both the doors. If when you open the door a load of water rushes out over the cills then your door seals are letting by. Water can collect at the base of the door between door seal and inner cill flange. When you brake the water can shoot forward into the footwell. I had this happen to me on my Lux on passenger side.

Also possible heater radiator or hoses are leaking. Check and monitor your coolant level for losses

Another possible source for the leak is the top of the windscreen seal itself. My passenger footwell has been perfectly dry ever since i reinforced my windscreen seal with bathroom sealant.

(this repair may not be to everyone's standards [:)] )

rear side windows can also leak, and so can the the hatch - depending on where can also reach the front. Square dash cars often rot out under the battery and blocked drains in the front scuttle area can also create issues.
