1990 964 outdoors

Hi all,

I have gotten carried away and have just bought my first Porsche, but my garage is not built yet, so I will be forced to keep it outside for a while.

Any recommendations for a good car cover?

Or any recommendations about the best way to keep the car outside?

Many thanks

This has been discussed before, although by the looks of it probably before your time on the forum.

Most people do not recommened using a cover outside as it can rub away and damage the paintwork or trap moisture & accellerate rust formation (especially so when used inside).

I also do not have a garage and keep my car outside all the time & I believe many members are in the same position as I am.

Leave the car outside, uncovered & don't worry about it. If any bird sh@t gets on it, ensure you remove it, but otherwise just put the car in the gararge when it gets built.

I'll second the above.

My last car was forced to live outside and for a while I tried car covers. Movement of the car cover and any dirt trapped between cover and car damages the paint. I was left with hairline scratches everywhere. Ive heard some people use towels betwen the cover and car, but id be worried about trapping mositure.

Just put plenty of wax on her and go without the cover :)

The biggest enemy of keeping a car outdoors without a cover is not dirt, bird droppings, or even dogs weeing on your wheels, but the UV spectrum in daylight - esp. when the sun is shining.

Regardless of waxing, UV light degrades the paint and fades the colour of not just the exterior bodywork, but the interior as well! The dashboard and the seats of any car are also exceptionally prone to drying out and cracking where they heat up in sunlight.

Classic Additions or Covercraft make breathable covers suitable for outdoor use and for that reason can be put onto wet cars! Yes, the car will dry out under them, not rust.

I've got both my 964 and Boxster under Classic Additions lightweight outdoor covers, without any problems. Providing a cover fits correctly they should not rub on the car and it is possible, for an extra charge, to have a custom fit cover for your particular model.

It depends on how pedantic you want to be, but my usual tack is if the car's a bit dirty from use that day and I've not got time to wash it properly, a dousing with the hose is enough to knock anything really grotty off its well waxed/polished paintwork, before putting the cover on and leaving it to dry off underneath.

Covers will move about slightly if there's wind, and if the paintwork isn't spotless, it will cause minute scratches due to rubbing , I would advise you to leave it outside without a cover, until you get your garage built.

The sun will oxidise paintwork, but it's easilly polished out, you've plenty of time to build the garage before winter.

My car lives outside. It's got a breathable cover but I only put it on when nasty, prolonged weather is expected because I find it a PIA.....especially taking it off when it's wet. The wife is not too chuffed when I fling a wet car cover on a recently cleaned floor [:D]

I only put it on when nasty, prolonged weather is expected
Which is most of the time in the UK [;)]

When I moved to Hampshire (from north east Surrey) late last year, it rained virtually non-stop for nearly three months, then we got snowed in, then when that was gone it started raining again! I actually ended up asking local people if it ever stopped raining down here. I've come to the conclusion that Alton must be one of the wettest parts of southern England.

It's belting down out there now, along with gale-force wind. Listening to it you'd think it was the middle of November!

When my cars not in the garage under an interior cover, I keep it under a cheap gazebo, it's permanantly in place and secured down of course. I get no problems with any of the above trying to do it harm and I can also wash it when the sun's at it's hottest, or even raining (sad I know). And yes the sun does come out in Hampshire!

I picked up my 6mtr x 3mtr gazebo for a little over £30.00 delivered. Although I've just looked for a link and can't find the same one again today.

Luckily I have room around the back of my place, not sure I'd get away with the gazebo out front.

wow thanks all, I have the original red paint work. I heard this colour suffers the most from sun fading? So I guess it needs some kind of cover, I am starting to think I might be better off getting a cheap metal shed.

Many thanks
