Hi there, I was reading on another post about peanut getting his 20 year old cellulose paint matched by the new compliant water based system paint. Can any one tell me the exact type of paint system used by porsche in 1990,I thought that they were one of the first named builders to start using waterbased paint promoting the green thing before it became compulsory, can anone help, many thanks John.

I spent a lot of time at the factory between 1988 and 1992, including in the paint line. (I still get hick-up's if I get a wiff of 2pack paint which has not cured yet.. but thats a long story!)
In 1990 they were using 2-pack paint. I believe they were actually using SpiesHecker and ICI back then.
From memory I think they stopped using Celulose completely around 1985 and moved onto 2-pack
Porsche were quite late at embracing waterbased paint, and I can't blame them, I still don't like it today... nasty nasty stuff, but then again for pure finish, celulose is still the best with 2k being better for durability... You can't beat the celulose which was available back when lead was still a component... but then again I doubt there are many people alive who used to paint with that and not just because of old age!

Thanks for that,I thought that they would have ditched cellulose and gone for two pack by the late eighties ,I thought i had read somewhere about the early move to waterbased compliants but I must be mistaken, so my old banger in cyclamen clear over base is 2k based, many thanks John.

see above "From memory I think they stopped using Celulose completely around 1985 and moved onto 2-pack " lol
I think Porsche were quicker than some to adopt waterbased paint.. but not as early/daft as a couple of companies who adopted it too early and suffered the problems of bird-poo intantly stripping the paint off of cars!
