1990 Targa

968er

New member
Just popped over from the 993 forum.

I have just dropped off a set of wheels for a refurb and noticed the owner had a turbo bodied targa in his garage.

Got chatting and it turns out that the car has only covered 12,000 miles and has not been out of the garage until a client brought it to him yesterday. The car looks in superb condition with a load of documentation, leather has no cracks and the bodywork has hardly any stonechips.

Bottom line he is thinking of buying it and is not sure of its value. I thought maybe around £18k but that was just a guess, so thought I would bounce it around here. The owner is looking for nearer £20k.

I would suggest its quite a bargain at £20k, however, he needs to be prepared to loose a fair bit if he's going to put some miles on it!

a 1990 targa....I'm probably being a bit thick here but I thought 964's came along in 1989......might be a good idea to check the chassis number!!

It is definitely not a 964. Would it be a late registered model?

Will be back to pick up my wheels on Saturday, what part of the vin number will say what year it is?

William,

Somewhere I have got a book with the list of chassis numbers issued for 3.2's
I will try and find it for you...in the meantime, email Tony Corlett...the moderator on this forum as he may have the info you need to hand.

Hi,
Hope this might be of some asistance. The breakdown of 911 chassis numbers up to and incl. 1986 - I don't have any info. to hand presently after that year.

Example chassis no:

WPO ZZZ 91 Z B S 1 0 00001

Some explanation:

1. WPO - No particular significance.
2. ZZZ - No particular significance.
3. 91 - The first two ciphers of the model: 91= 911, 93=Turbo, 96= 964, 99=993 o 996.
4. Z - No particular significance.
5. B - Age (Year)of build; A=1981, B=1982 etc.
6. S - Production place: S=Stuttgart, N=Neckarsulm.
7. 1 - Third ciphers which allows to identify the model.
8. 0 - Body or engine type.
9. 00001 - Ascending numbers

Cheers,
Gordon
