Hi there, i noticed no one has replied so I thought I would.

Firstly i don't know anything about this particular car itself so this is in general, however these cars can be expensive to maintain, at under 2k miles a year on average has it been serviced well? has it been run regularly? has the air con been used regularly? i'd imagine at 2k miles a year the air con is barely on.

These cars can have a few mechanical and electrical gremlins however there is alot of knowledge available on them, a few specialists in the US who can often get parts that Porsche dealerships in the UK cannot.

With auto's they can suffer from TBF this can grind the engine block down inside and write it off so you must have the car up on a ramp to check for this, especially spending that much money. This PDF file show what damage can occur and what it takes to check it. http://members.rennlist.com/v1uhoh/928TechFlexPlatearticleTH.pdf

Mine is an early car so it took about 15min to check it. If you have cats then the exhaust may need to be moved.

You don't mention if the car is an S4, GT or GTS etc, this can make a difference to its value.

forums.rennlist.com are useful as is the 928.org email list at http://www.928.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/928uk

If you have any questions the email list can be very helpful.

I forgot to mention the cambelt, make sure its done at least every 5 years / 50,000 miles whichever is sooner, many recommend shorter intervals, you usually replace the waterpump at the same time, and give the tensioner a refresh or change to a PorKensioner system.

If they say the belt was changed 5k miles ago which the mileage shows was eg. 8 years ago then it needs changing straight away unless you want a lot of bent valves.

Budget £500-£1k for this depending who you have to do it and the labour rate in the area you go to.

Dear nofreeusernames,

I couldn't have put better if I tried. However there is one big omission: this is a wonderful car - as you probably know Porsche went all out to produce the masterpiece which Porsche intended to replace the 911. Without getting into what a must be an inconclusive discussion as to why it didn't replace the 911 I think that I am safe in suggesting it was not because of any 928 shortcomings but rather a lethal combination of timing, oil shortage and folks fondness for the 911. Sixteen years after production ceased there is still a large community of 928 owners worldwide and a couple of years ago a 928 sold for over U.S.$100000 in the States. I do think that speaks volumes for the car, but ultimately (and no offense to anyone since it is really a matter of taste), having driven most of the current Porsches (except the Panamera), this is the one I would pick.

Best wishes
