1992 964 C2 Manual 133k miles

I've owned the car for 8 months and it's been reliable. This morning, it let me down- cut out while driving, then picked up. I pulled over with it idling and had a quick look under the engine cover. Checked all connectors right. It was reluctant to come off idle. Carried on anyway and it cut out properly. It started again no problem and I turned back for home. Of course, the 5 miles back home were faultless!

I'm thinking about clogged ISV and dirty MAF. Would you say I'm on the right track?

I have recently experienced some pinking which I put down to a loose secondary dizzy cap. I cleaned the rotor arm and contacts and reassembled but it did do it again. It starts okay on either distributor, so I'm confident the belt is okay. I will replace the dizzy caps and rotor arms because they caps are of different makes!

All the connectors I removed yesterday are clean inside. I checked this because the air temp sensor on the blower ducting was very corroded, but this seems to be the only one. Knock sensor connectors both look clean.

Thank you for any support.

No expert on this, but just suggestion...

You seem to know the common culprits, but check earth leads where appropriate too, as it sounds if these might need inspection, cleaning and tightening too - sometimes corrosion can be a issue with these. Worth looking round everything for this if it’s not been kept on top of.

Dizzy caps and rotors are a good idea anyway - you might as well replace the ‘rubber band’ belt [:)] while you’re there (and ensure the vent pipe for this is back in place too).

(...PS great forum name :ROFLMAO:)

When it is running are you getting varying throttle/engine response when on the throttle - accelerating or just cruising?

As mentioned always a good idea to eliminate the ISV and MAF. A good cleaning of both of these with a can of brake cleaner is a good and easy place to start and then rule out as a cause.

Had you just washed the car? I had same symptoms after getting the engine wet washing the rear grill. I've been more careful since and it hasn't reoccurred.

Thank you. I will try cleaning the earth straps as soon as I get my laptop back from battery replacement, and I can run ScanTool to check for any errors. I don't want to lose its memory!

Thank you. I cleaned the mechanical side of the MAF with carb cleaner and also popped the cover off and cleaned the curved tracks with contact/switch cleaner.

I also cleaned out a lot of black from the ISV using carb cleaner.

I went for a short test drive last night and it's much better! Particularly the idle. I can taxi around my drive now without stalling. The engine runs nicely too, so I hope I've got it.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Good that the ISV is reasonably accessible on a 964...
Hope you’ve sorted it, then, great news [:)]

Thanks for all your suggestions.
I'm confident I have fixed the problem following a longer, spirited test drive this morning.
I expect the MAF contacts were dirty and cleaning the ISV an added bonus while I was on there.
I can highly recommend buying a can of carb-cleaner and soaking the ISV for a couple of hours- the transformation is incredible. The idle is so sweet and heel/toe gear changes are so easy now the revs don't drop below 800 RPM!
Happy 964-ing!
