1st and 2nd Gear cold starts 997s

Hi Everyone

First Post....

I've had my 2005 997s for nearly a year now and over the last few months it doesn't like going into low gears when it's cold. It's covered by an Independant Porsche Warranty (one of the top guys) and they have tested it and said there is no problem, works fine (never heard of this problem before)... I've had others/friends drive it and agree when it's cold it's a pain to get into 1st and 2nd gear.

I know its 3 months until the end of the warranty blah blah but other forums do mention the early cars have clunky/stiff gears when cold..... so... do they ?

Iain.

Welcome to the forum Iain. Yes they do - especially if you have the short shift. Don't believe they have never heard of it before!!

Hi Iain,

Welcome to the forum.

First and second gears can be a little stiff from cold, particualrly when a short-shifter has been fitted, but not unreasonably so. If you have to force it, then something could be bent or damaged. Compare it with another vehicle if you can or get your OPC to take a look.

I don't know what you've been driving before, but it IS a high performance sports car you now have and as such, is more focused and makes greater demands than your avarage family/passenger car. [;)]

I hope all is well. [:)]

Regards,

Clive.

Do you mean when ambient temperatures have been cold and the car is cold it doesn't like 1st and 2nd or increasingly (regardless of ambient temperatures) it doesn't like 1st and 2nd when starting up when previously it was ok?

In other words when it was previously warm last summer were those gears ok, and now when it's warm again they are not ok? Or just when the temp outside is cold? (in all cases when you first start up the car)

I didn't notice it before, but it was bought last summer.. When everything is cold.. wait for it to say "i've got oil" and then depress the clutch, turn on, first gear and second are stiff and generally needing a second/third attempt inc re clutch to get into gear.

When it's warm it's fine ( all up to temp ) smooth changes.

I have come to live with it - both on the 997C2S which I had for 4 years and the 997TT which has a short-shifter. The 1st and 2nd gears almost identical in behaviour when cold but nothing really to worry about as far as I can tell. Never had any clutch or engagement issues and 1st gear is a bit harder to put in but it works all the time.

The difference here is he didn't notice it/didn't exist before, so it's a new problem. I'd get a second opinion on it from another garage.

Hello Ian,

I have the same problem when cold. I bought my car some 20 months ago with 23k miles on the clock. But I also had the problem when shifting up or down through 5th gear, it "grated". This got better after about 10-15 minutes of driving. I discussed this with Hatfield OPC and they said the fifth gear issues was not correct, and changed the gear box out.

Even with this new box 1st and 2nd are bit stiff for the first 10 mins or so........... Mine has a short-shift.

I also had the same problem, but to a lesser extent on my previous 05 reg Boxster, because it did not have the short-shift...

Hope this helps

Cheers
Mike

Hi

I have the same symptoms as you short shift box and until all warmed 1st and 2nd feel notchy and stiff to engage after 20minutes or so in and out like a rifle[:D]

Cheers JP

Thanks all, good to hear it's not just me :)

I'm going to get it looked at by an OPC... just to check though.

Iain.

My C2S is the same, it goes into first initially with no problems but when i drive 200 yards to the end of my road and I need to go back into first at the junction it is always stiff and I have to re clutch. After a few mins its fine though, it's never bothered me as I never push the car until the oil temperature has got up to normal temp
