Well it was going to happen sooner or later and it happened today. Leaving work i caught the nearside rear wing on the wall scraping about 1 inch of metal of the back wheel arch. Taken it to a bodywork place who say it will cost 350 to respray whole side of the car including door. Surely there is no need to do this amount of respraying. Does anybody know if you can get artic grey metalic touch up kit, and if i should take it to cardiff opc or a local body repair place in south wales. would appreciate anybodys thoughts and ideas on how to have my car looking smart again.

Hi

Is there a local SMART (Small-Medium-Area-Repair-Techniques) repairer - Chipsaway etc that people could recommend?

How deep is the scratch

Pete

I think most of the SMART repair operations are franchises, so the quality is dependent on the actual person doing the repair - see if anyone has any local recommendations - you could ask the OPC if they know anyone local, they may use someone themselves

This is just someone from an Internet search, but this is the type of business that would be able to help:

DENTS 2 GO!!! is a mobile dent and light scratch removal service in South Wales and the South West. The repair needs no filling or painting. Call 07977 069149 or 01495 756985, or email leeburston@dents-2-go.co.uk (website: www.dents-2-go.co.uk).

If you fancy a drive up to London at the weekend, R20 have an event at the Ace Cafe including estimates from ChipsAway:

Sounds same as the wheel arch scrap I did in my A6 a few years ago .. similar quote from Audi for respray .. However that weekend when I went in the supermarket.. Chipsaway had a "stand" and I asked him can you fix it .. he said yes 140 GBP... I gave it a go and it was perfect .. even thou I knew where the damage had been I could not see it .. had the car for 2 more years it never showed.. They do free Quotes ask them .. They guy I used was the Reading Area guy in that helps

Most decent repairers will spray the whole side to ensure any colour match diffs wont show up in the middle of a side panel. With metalic paints the metalic bits can lay a different angles so if you painted say one door the metalic bits could lay left and the rest of the side could lay right making it look a different colour. When you go right up to the front and back wings its not so noticeable.

I had a metallic silver 911 that had a small bubble (1") on the rear wing and like you I was told that the whole wing would have to be repainted and feathered into the next panel in order to hide any colour mismatch. I was horrified at this, not the price, but the amount of none original work that I would be left with. No way would I accept that.
However I did find someone who treated the area, feathered in the silver paint for about 4" around the repair and then feathered in the lacquer a few inches past that. It was absolutely perfect and after two years was still perfect. It takes a craftsman to do this sort of work and believe me they are not easy to find. This guy is in Lancashire so it's not much use to you if you live in the London area. I'm sure that there must be someone on this forum who has a similar contact near you.
Best of luck.

just got back form chipsaway cardiff and geoff has done an absolutley superb job - cant even see where it was. 150 well spent.
