Great forum!

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.....
i'm 29/m (30 next march ugh [:(] ).... and in order to quell some of my midlifeohmygodi'mnearly30amdwhathaveigottoshowforit problem.... the wife has agreed to buy me a boxter... (loverly!)... so i'm looking early models 97/98 with tip (too much london driving.. cant be asked with manual).... anyways.. i'm waffling here...

q's:

1/
insurance. i am currently a company car driver and all the premium research i have done equalls quotes at £1400 - 2500! (admiral/aa/directline etc)
any recommendations??!!

2/
high milage doesnt scare me (up to 80k with fpsh).. but what will the car be like?
running costs?
serving costs - should i look to get it serviced at a idependent dealer or still porsche?
(i'm in sussex)

3/
whats the reallife mpg with a 2.5tip?

4/
i'll be doinga round 18-20k miles pa.. will this pose a prob?

any help/answers etc greatly appriciated!!

thanks!!

Insurance, unfortunately I think your postcode is probably the issue. Have you tried:
Liverpool Victoria
elephant.co.uk
Admiral
Esure
First Alternative
more than
Tesco
Halifax
egg
legal & general
norwich union
direct line
http://www.cccinsurance.co.uk/
http://www.privilege.co.uk/
Bell Direct

High mileage not a problem, but get a problem Pre Purchase Inspection (PPI) from an Official Porsche Centre (OPC) - don't rely on the RAC etc, they will miss important stuff. Condition will all depend on how it's been looked after.

Servicing - independent definitely, no benefit in the OPC prices now.

mpg - I'd imagine around 23-25.

20K a year - not a problem so long as you can handle the servicing, fuel and tyre costs....there is a boxster somewhere out there with well over 200K on it, and Dave Goodwin the assistant RO for scotland north regularly tracks his 70,000 miler and no problems.

thanks for replies!!

ok... with 20k a year how many services and at what cost am i looking at??

fuel not a prob as i get business fuel back from company.... (tho at moment i get 45mpg from my ghia x mondeo!)

what's cost of a set of tyres... i assume life of tyre is dependant on way it's driven etc..
and how much is ppi from opc? ( i love these acronyms! )

i love it... if only it was slightly cheaper and for sale in nov/dec (thats when i'm most likely to get out of company car!)

As for insurance, don't touch admiral, elephant or any of the cheaper companies, they don't insure the car properly. The will only cover basic spec, which means that upgraded alloys, leather, tiptronic or anything else that was an option is not covered in case of a write-off settlement. I discovered this recently when checking admiral's small print and my 35K 03 would've been settled at less than 30K if the worst had happened. I switched to AXA who did a good price and proper coverage.

I've just renewed my insurance, and I'd really suggest giving Liverpool Victoria a call (0800 514514). They cover the car for "Market Value" - which means all optional goodies are covered, give protected no claims and business cover for standard - plus they're not bothered about any points on your licence (unless you got a ban!)

The only thing they don't touch are Track Days[:(] - but seeing as they've saved me nearly £600 [:D]on my existing insurer's best quote I can live with that !
