2.0 Coolant loss - help

Can you offer any advice to Jim?

I'd be grateful for your advice. I've had the above car since 1989 but for the past 6 months or more there has been a loss of coolant. There is no obvious leak and if the car is left running at idle for say 30 minutes it does not appear to lose fluid. However if I travel perhaps 20-30 miles of mixed motoring it requires a litre of fluid. I thought the problem was the radiator cap which had virtually lost it's rubber seal. After replacing that it appeared cured but unfortunately the problem returned. I left the car with the local garage I use (not a Porsche specialist) and they said they ran it round, tighter up a number of hoses and that it seemed ok. However again after two days and about 25 miles the fluid had gone from the overflow container.

I have looked at the oil and the oil cap and it is clean, no cream to suggest a head gasket issue. That was replaced probably about 15-20,000 miles ago. The car runs fine with no apparent loss of power.

Are there causes which you can suggest and hopefully ways to resolve them without great expense. The car is generally very good condition apart from the usual dashboard cracks but is clearly not worth much. Perhaps it is time to give it up ?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Jim Armstrong

Was the rad cap the correct one - just because a component is new doesn't mean it can't leak.

Hose and other connections sometimes leak after the car has cooled down - newspaper under the car should tell you that.
Don't forget to check the inaccessible hoses to the heater at the back of the engine.

Why was the head gasket replaced? Was the head checked for straightness at the time?
Water in the oil or mayonnaise in the oil cap will only happen if the oil and water mix - the coolant may be leaking direct into the cylinder or at the gasket joint, to the outside.
The garage should also be able to check if you are getting combustion products in the coolant = head gasket.

There are only about 1000 left on the road so worth fixing as you've had it for so long.

Have you checked the front carpets for damp-heater matrix can leak & need replacement /repair.
