2.5, 2.7 or S?

Hi all

Possibly thinking of getting a newer Porsche and I think a used Boxster will fit the bill nicely (and will just about be in my price range[8D]), so can anybody tell me the differences and if it would make more economical sense (apart from the cost of insurance - already checked that one out) in getting one above the other and anything I need to look out for.

Thanks
Nic

Nic baring in mind that your used to driving a 911 Targa i would advise you to go for an S if possable. else your reallygoing to miss the power under your right foot.

I'm going to blagg a test drive in a 2.7 in january, I don't know If I'll notice much difference as you have to remember mine is an '89 and I'm sure that they have done lots to increase the performance.

I fell in love with the Cayman when I drove that on Tuesday, now that did shift, but at the moment one is just too far out of my reach.

One thing I did notice when I was playing in a Boxster afterwards, was that with the roof up they are terribly dark inside, is this the case with all of them or was it just the choice of interior colour?

think you just notice it more as your used to a targa.. I hink you would soon get used to it.

I never noticed my Boxster being dark inside and that was all Black.

Never noticed my old 2.7 being dark inside. It was relatively dark as the interior was all black, but it never struck me as unusual. However, since I picked up my new S this year with grey interior, suddenly my old 2.7 was rather dark. So in my experience, yes, colour does make a difference.

I drove my first Boxster on Tuesday. It had an all black interior and it did feel incredibly dark and claustrophobic, the rear window was very faded and reversing was a nightmare. The clutch grated and creaked like crazy as it started to bite (I don't think it was a looked after example [;)] )

...and people say they are too easy to drive! [:D]

The prices of 2.5 and 2.7 cars have fallen more than the S , and the S is the s/h choice for most people ( ask the dealers ) and they are easier to sell in a difficult market . If you have £22k or more to spend you should get something really nice . You will definately notice the power difference , especially if you have driven the Cayman, happy hunting .

Go for the latest car you can afford - in the real world there isn't an awful lot to choose between the 2.7s and the S. 2.5 still a good car, but you have to work it pretty hard to make the most of the performance

S more expensive to insure and service, and the drilled brake discs of the S are a lot more prone to corrosion for some reason.

I never noticed the interior as dark even tho it was black on black, but then all my cars are ;)

I'm not a fan of the pale grey, i think the dash plastics look poorer quality, even though they are the same in black.

Every one to their own ;)

Definitely the S but drive that and a 2.7 and decide for yourself. You get lots of kit as std in the S that you have to pay for on a 2.7 when new but second hand values are different and lots of 2.7s were ordered with good options. If you intend to drive enthusiastically, the S is noticeably friskier!!

Have fun.

Athough the 2.5, 2.7 & S performance is not that different on paper, as the engine size increases they are increasingly usable in the real world. I chose the 2.7 as the happy medium, as it has more torque than the 2.5 and costs less to run on fuel & insurance than the 3.2.
Some 2.7 parts are shared with the 2.5 & some with the 3.2, so I don't think there is a big difference there.
But of course, being Boxsters they are all great fun & a pleasure to own [:D]

What's your budget Nicola?

Drive them all off course, but I would suggest that if your budget is at the cusp of the model year, then go for the newest. eg if you can either afford a last of the line plastic window "S" or a well specced glass screen 2.7, then go for the latter. Off course, you'll get more grunt and a 6 speed box in any S, but the Porsche continuous improvement philosophy would mean, in my opinion, that you'd have a better package going for the revised version. If your budget would allow you either version of the same derivative, then hell, go for the S.

Depends on what my husband fleeces me for......
I suppose whatever I can sell the 911 for and a couple of grand, so not much I suppose!

Nicola, whilst not being a Boxster owner I'm not in the best position to answer your question but did contemplate a Boxster about 12 months ago and drove both the 2.7 ( which was well specced ) and an S and personally for the £ to £ I would have bought the 2.7 as the difference in performance did seem minimal , but as always buy right and you will enjoy whichever you choose , but will you not end up longing for your Targa back? [;)] , I really enjoyed the Boxster but for me it was just to modern/clinical but each to their own.

I'm sure I will miss Tara,[] but I can't get here in and out of the garage and she doesn't want to be sat there not being used. So I'm looking for something a bit more user friendly, narrower and still within budget.

I have the turbo bodied 911 so she's got a big fat a$$[;)]

But will have to measure them both.

Don`t own one, but regularly drive 3.2S, brand new, and a beautiful car it is too. Light tan interior feels spacious after my all black leather. I think you can also buy a hard top for about £1100 to fit on? Tiptronic, wheels spin a lot accelerating away on a wet/greasy surface, maybe due to a heavy right foot...Bose upgrade is good as well.

Nicola there is only one car for you, one which is terrific value at the moment.
Get an SLK 320 with the Auto box and to ease your Porsche concience get an old 924 Banger
for Porsche days.
Safe, Secure ,Instant Cabriolet none of that noise in the back of your head. Arrive at your destination relaxed. You won't look back only at the 911's you have overtaken.
AND NO OIL LEAKS ! ! !
