right new one for you all. suddenly today after a brisk little jaunt down the dual carriageway but only after it had warmed up i notice the 944 was sounding really rough it had been running sweet untill then. sounding like a diesel now especially more noticeable on tickover and rundown :( its literally just had the cambelt done, temps were fine and after i noticed it checked oil level, coolant condition and ht leads all appear fine. anyone got any ideas what this could be :(

Smiffy,

I had a similar experience just afte having the belts done on my Lux - all was fine for a day or two and then the idling became rough and there was vibration through the rev range ... most noticeably above 4,000 rpm. I checked all levels, temps and pressures and came to the conclusion that the cam timing had probably slipped a tad and took it back to the garage (a very well respected specialist in Oxfordshire) and they said "they all do that sir ... bring it back at the 1000 mile mark and we'll check it". Sure enough, at the 1000 mile check, after some adjustment, it ran sweet as a nut. The next time I got the belts replaced, I used a different garage (Porsche Shop Halesowen) and there was no vibration/running rough issue either immediately after the belts had been done or after. Don't know if that helps any?

ORIGINAL: Panzer944

"they all do that sir ...

They certainly don't if the job has been done properly [] From memory I have had 4 seperate belt changes on my cars over the years and apart from once where the balance belt was put on a bit tight and whined a little (until I took it straight back) you could't hear any difference between the old and new belts.

Smiffy I'd get it looked at asap because something isn't right and if the belts have literally just been changed its not jumping to conclusions to suspect something isn't quite 100%

You need to be more specific.
Is it just noise or is it running badly?
Is it running on all 4?
Is there a power loss?
Where roughly does the noise come from?
Rattle or deep sounding knock?
Oil pressure?

right found what the problem was, it was a really loud knocking noise but drive and power weren't affected. turned out to be the woodruff key bit on to the cam which then in turn has the dizzy rotor bolted to it. The long bolt that bolts it to the cam down the middle had worked itself loose so the whole big chunk of metal and rotor were wobbling/vibrating. luckily as soon as i heard it i stopped driving so no damage has been done to the inside of the pretty much brand new dizzy. it can only really be my fault from when i changed the cam tower i remember trying to find out the torque loading of the bolt but as it didnt seem to have one just did it tight. have refitted it now with thread lock and all is fine but will be replacing woodruff key bit and bolt just to be on the safe side and keeping an eye on it. thanks for the advice guys.
