2.5 or 2.7 buying advice

Hi everyone,
I am currently looking for a boxster and am a bit confused.
I have heard rumours that i should stay away from the 2.5 as the engines arn't as reliable as the 2.7s.
I can just about stretch to a 2.7 but my insurance goes up £300.00 and i won't be able to be as picky with the spec i want. eg colour and mileage
Any advice??

Load of old rhubarb Andy. Take no notice of that. They are the same engine. Make sure that whatever you buy has a cast iron service history (the OPC dealer will be able to corroborate it).

Other than that, usual used car checks apply. Particular to the Boxster would be found here http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=218334

If you can stretch, get the 2.7. Better car all round and there are some good value cars out there - shouldn't break your budget if you are prepared to look. Don't worry about big mileages if you find one that's been obsessively looked after.

Not entirely rhubard as slipped cylinder liners only affected a batch of 2.5's however I would expect that most cars that were going to suffer this have probably done so by now and now have a replacement engine installed.
 
I have just bought a 2.5 and had a 987 2.7 on loan for a month, I have found the 2.5 to be excellent and am not bothered that much by the differance in power.
 
I run a 2.5 around London and have never found power an issue. Its more than adequate in seeing off other cars when pressed, incl hot hatches(because it revs so freely and also because of the excellent gearbox), and most car users just don't "try". In a drag race the other day with a 996 up to 40-45mph not much in it. We both backed off at 40/45 due to safety and speed cam !. Just get the one you really want in terms of other specs as the 2.5 performance will not fail to disappoint.
 
Another significant difference is that 2.7's have fly-by-wire (eGas) throttle. It makes it much easier to retrofit cruise control (and OBC) if it's on your wish list and the car doesn't have it fitted.
 
Do you know how much the cruise control upgrade is? I use my 2003 S on the M'Way alot and cruise would be great!!
