2.5 or 3.2s

Hi all
I (we) have decide to buy a boxster but we're in a bit of a dilema wether to go for the cheaper 2.5/2.7 and buy one soon or wait a little bit longer (save up more) and go for the 3.2s, my questions to you is is there that much difference between the three models? ie performance, handling, brakes etc, and is it that noticeable on the road?. Thanks in advance for your replies[:)]

I had a 2.5 for over 4 years and enjoyed every moment of it, its not the quickest car ever but it is a spritly car with Porsche running all the way through the middle, the 5 speed box was perfect, much better than the 6.

I now have the 3.2, yep it goes much better - and much better than the statistics say, better equiped but then again the 2.5 was a 97 this is a 2002.
I love this car, and given the choice go for the 3.2 - not because its quicker but because its more flexible and willing to pull, plus you never quite feel what if - later on, Never met anyone who says wish i had the same car with less power.
Insurance, fuel etc - bugger all in it, go for the S, oh yes but dont wait, follow your heart not your head - your a long time dead - enjoy now

We had two 2.5s from new. Nice cars but underpowered. The 2.7 is better and incorporates a number of improvements, but the 3.2'S' is definitely worth the extra. In both 986 and 987 guises, the 'S' is the model that sets the Boxster apart from all its competitors.

Thanks guys you confirmed my suspicions as good a cars as the 2.5/2.7 are the 3.2s is the one to go for out of the three, thats sorted just have to decide what colour now, unfortunatly it won't be for a few months yet poss even the begining of next year, don't know whether prices fluctuate with the seasons, maybe get a winter bargain you never know[;)].

I agree. No time like the present. I had been thinking about getting a boxster for about 2 years. I have had my 2.7 for 4 weeks now and enjoying every second. My only regret is that i didn't do it sooner!!!! Go for it ............. now!

Sorry, I would say wait for the right one, don't rush in, especially if it is your first Porsche; it took me about an year of search to get my first Porsche with the rough spec/options and price I was ready to pay and I wasn't looking for anything rare either i.e. just wanted a Basalt Black with full black leather interior facelift Boxster S...

I understand where everyone is coming from with the "life is too short and summer comes but once a year...", but if you have never had a Porsche then this should not be an issue for you (well, it wasn't for me). I got mine on 1st of Feb, several years back and like every year: spring and summer came... [8D]. It becomes a different story with porsche no. 2,3,4...

If you are in no hurry then buying between Nov and March could save you £1 to £2k. I would suggest setting your limit know and start looking as there are plenty 3.2's out there between £15 and 17k, the longer you wait the more you will regret it.

The S every day of the week!
Its an awesome car, and if you can, and there are plenty of great ones out there.
Be picky, waith for the right one, but there awesome machines anyway.
Have had my MY03 since Jan, and love it to bits!!
You will too............

I got my Boxster in November and I would say I had better weather in Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May than now. Christmas and New Years days with the roof down was awesome. (I have a 2.7)

I would suggest that if you're not buying a Boxster as a penis substitute the humble 2.5 or 2.7 are more than adequate for most mortals. [:D]

Now this comes up quite a lot (sorry for the pun)

Went to Bupa, asked for a 2" extension, seems the cost was greater than the 3.2 Box, so i bought the Box

I am with JCB on this one. I can't see a need for a 3.2 unless a, you go to germany often and use the autobahn regularly, about the only place you need the extra grunt on the road. or b, you track day the car regularly and have the ability to use the extra hp. A 2.5 driven properly is plenty fast for road use.
For all others you will be using 40% probably less of the cars ability all the time and that's a waste of money in my book. Oh and of course the 3.2 will cost more intially, return less mpg and cost marginally more to insure and maintain (try costing a set of discs and pads for both!) .
The major difference between the 2.7 and 2.5 is...........when the hoods up it's quieter. That's about it.

I have a July '98 factory collection Boxster bought from Rivervale near Brighton. I had the car on order for 18 months! Became addicted to Porsche Pete's Boxster Board while it was on order. The M030 sports suspension is superb. The engine sound at 5,700 still freaks me! The 2.5 is more than enough for me and the 5 speed box is really slick. I only wish I had chosen a more exciting colour than Artic Silver! Anyone in the Kent/E.Sussex area wishing to meet up for a convoy email me.

I completely agree with the comments that the 2.5 is more than adequate. There is a bigger debate around this (CO2/ glogal warming ) but if most of your intended driving is going to be around town or 80% of the time using 20% of the power there is no point moving up just for cubic capacity and 0-60mph. After all there are cars out there that will out do 0-60mph of a Boxster 3.2 (Jap Subarus/ Skylines etc) for a lot less money. The driving experience is more than just 0-60. Unless you intend trackdaying a lot then I can see the attraction of Carrerra GT's , more powerful models etc , but most of the time I think these are "must haves" just like every new Porsche model. There will always be a faster Porsche - every year from Porsche !

Boxster 2.5 (its a Porsche - who cares about cubics!)
