2.5 prices

Hi there,

Doing some research into buying my first porsche. My budget will just about stretch to an early 2.5 boxter. Prices seem to vary by quite a bit. I've seen 1997 cars advertised for 12K and cars of the same age for 17-18K. I have a max. budget of 13K. will this buy me a decent car or a dog. If I can't afford a decent 2.5 I would rather buy something else.

I'm currently living in the UAE (Dubai) but will be back home in Edinburgh in the new year.

Thanks.

Martin.

imho the differences in price reflects the age and spec of the 2.5 in question. Early 97 cars had a very plasticky interior that did nothing for the quality of the car. Subsiquent revisions to that and to minor differences in spec make the later 2.5's more appealing and therefore slightly higher priced. For instance the center console was an option until 99 (i think) so many 97/98 cars don't have them. Most people go for at least leather seats and climate control and many of the cheaper cars out there don't have these, which is fine until you come to sell it on yourself. I bought mine in June this year and to be honest I can't see any rhd 2.5 being exactly worth having at 13k. You will find at that lower end the cars will be fairly unloved with curbed wheels, low spec and tatty interiors. That is not to say that the odd gem is not out there but you will spend a long time looking. As with all Porsches cheap ones are so for a reason, usually.

I'd agree with a lot of the above but my '97P (allbeit a LHD) has full leather, heated seats, aircon, centre console, sound pack, FPSH. I think you have to work out what is essential spec in the car, what is desirable and then look at the cars available. Good time to buy I would have thought.
If you can possibly scrape any more money together then I'd also look at 2.7 and S models. The price spread seems to be very slim.

Having just sold my Boxster,I am in the position of looking to buy another Porsche .I think if you look at prices esp Boxsters and 996 at this time of year there is a glut in the market and if you wait till mid Feb there will be bargains galore to be had ,I recently made a bid on a 996 at under £3k below the asking price and the person would consider it . So look around there are a lot of cars out there. When you get your car join us at the east coast meets .

Happy hunting
Brian
