2.5 vs 2.7 differences

Hi

A friend of mine is looking to buy a Boxter and has been offered a car registered Sept 99. It is a RHD German import on a T plate and the seller is claiming it is a 2.7. I had a good look at it and it looks, sounds and drives like a 2.5 from what I can tell and the age seems to confirm this. As it is an import, Porsche Cars GB cannot confirm the chassis number.

Are there any ways to distinguish a 2.5 from a 2.7 given that the engine is not that accessible? I was told that there is a web site where you can check chassis/engine numbers of all Porsche production cars - is this true or a myth?

It would make for a cheap 2.7 but a pricey 2.5!! Any help much appreciated [:)].

Thanks

As it is an import, Porsche Cars GB cannot confirm the chassis number.

Of course they can - they just refuse to[]

Try calling Porsche in Germany - the number should be on thier website.
In my experience they all speak English to an emmbarrasingly good level.

The 10th digit in the VIN should be a Y for model year 2000.

If it' s less e.g. an X it' s a MY1999 and therefore a 2.5

If you hit 70 in second it' s a 2.7!

JCB..

If it was imported from a Porsche dealer in Germany I think it should have come with Certificate of Conformity which will say what the engine size is.

Your local dealer can access international Vin numbers, if you grovel & ask very nicely. But if the car isn' t C16 Uk spec then you don' t really know what you are buying spec wise & the service history is also difficult to check. It may be cheaper to buy , but it will also be harder to sell & will sell for less. My advice is don' t look at an import unless it C16, you may pay more , but you get peace of mind & better re-sale.

Thanks all for your feedback. Car is UK spec (C16) and we haven' t had sight of the V5 which would have been easier. Will check the VIN number and try calling Porsche in Germany.

Might not be true of non-UK cars, but I' m fairly sure all 2.7' s have the leather and alloy gearlever, whereas the 2.5 one is all leather. Also most 2.7' s have the current 3 spoke steering wheel.

Regards

The 3 spoke was an option on MY2000 cars not standard.

Also MY2001 cars according to Blondie...[]
