2.5L Lux exhausts...

Hi all,

I need to replace my exhaust system and I've noticed quite a bit of exhaust traffic among the turbo crowd... I was wondering if anyone has similar experience with any of the various 'performance' items (Dansk, Cargraphic, Janspeed etc.) out there for 2.5L Luxes...

What have you fitted? Any noticeable improvement in sound and hp? Have any of you dyno-tested your cars before and after? Decibel levels?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know the answer I'll get from the turbo and S2ers will be 'buy a better car', and believe me it'd be nice but having just had our first baby 5 months ago I'm giving myself credit for hanging onto the one I've got [;)]

Not at all - I've never had a Lux but plent of the guys on here have and I think you'll find them spoken of quite highly.

Do Essential Styling do a Lux system? If so it will be Janspeed designed.
 
I've just fitted a Dansk St/St 'sports' back box.

I can't honestly say its made much difference, maybe in pick up.
I fitted Silverstone plugs from Andrew Swwetham (Pro-max motorsport) and felt the same

Certainly the combination has made a marginal difference, if nothing it sounds a bit better! Worth taking the long way home via some underpasses [;)]
 
Most of the aftermarket parts suppliers (Berlyn, Design911, Type911, Porsch-a-part) do 'sports' back boxes, and stainless steel back boxes for the Lux, but the few people I have heard trying them say they only really add a sportier sound. I've never heard of someone doing a before and after test. Maybe you could be the first on our proposed Jamsport rolling road day [:D]

It's important with normally aspirated cars to maintain the correct backpressure in the system so there is the risk that a throughflow box will actually reduce performance (unless it was matched with a freer flowing air filter and then the ECU adjusted (chipped) to take advantage of the extra flow)

I've already got a quote from Hayward&Scott. £550+VAT for full system from the manifold back. I love my car dearly but when an exhaust is going to cost 1/5 of the cars value...

I'm weakening as I write though...[;)]

I've never understood why that is important, but have heared it noted on several occaisions.

I can appreciate how optimal pipe velocity can potentialy cause a partial vaccume in the system, thus scavaging air from the cylinder, but surely back pressure would cause the gasses to back up.

On a similar vein, why is it that 4 into 1 manifolds produce more power than 4 into 2 into 1 and yet the latter produces more torque at lower revs.

At the end of the day I think we have to accept the exhausts are a bit of a Black Art.

Lux's Rock! Belinda still hasn't forgiven me for getting rid of ours.

Re: Lux exhaust you could also try Blame Flame Racing. I ordered a s/steel system from them but the order was delayed as they were moving factories and I ended up with a OE exhaust from my OPC.
 
OK, I'm no expert, but it's to do with the pulse.

I have no idea how the power / torque thing works except to say that increasing the power low down by a small amount increases the torque more significantly because torque is some function of power divided by engine speed. I think.

The scavenging / back perssure thing I can explain - when the exhaust valve first opens you want the spent gases to be sucked out of the cylinder and a good exhaust is pulse tuned such that it does that. Later in the cycle the inlet opens and the charge startes to come in. At this point the exhaust valve is still open (valve overlap) so any suck from the exhaust will result in the mixture going out the exhaust port. At this point you want back pressure. At different engine speeds the pulse helps to different degrees (because it is either timed correctly or not) and I guess the 4:1 and 4:2:1 manifolds create a different pulse speed (faster in 4:2:1 presumably) which helps higher up the revs, and that means power whereas 4:1 is a slower pulse that helps lower down so the increase is more noticeable as torque rather than power. That's my basic understanding. Please feel free to correct me if I'm talking bollox.
