2.7 944 Gearbox Speedo Problem

Guest

New member
Hi there I am new to the group,

Just bought a 1989 2.7 944 needing work

The car has had the gearbox replaced with that of a 1985 944 US spec, and the speedo does not work, i have been told this is due to the speedo cable connects somewhere else on the car on the US spec cars? is this true, if so what can i do to get it working?

The original gearbox had a noisy diff and clunked on takeoff. Is this an easy repair if so this would be the best option to put it back to standard

What do you think??

Also the car need some decent second hand seats, what is the best option? and decent breakers for these cars?

Thanks in advance

Tim

Welcome along, Tim.

I'd be very surprised if the US gearbox uses a different speedo cable because it's a US one, but the fact the car it came from was a 1985 possibly means it was a 924 dash model which had a traditional cable speedo whereas your '89 oval dash car expects an electronic speedo drive in the side of the 'box.

I suspect either sourcing a later gearbox or fixing your original would be the most satisfactory way of addressing the problem.

In terms of breakers there is Porsch-Apart and Douglas Valley that spring to mind - plus others that other people will doubtless suggest. There is also a guy on the Titanic list who breaks cars and is just about to start on a Turbo that is in good condition but worth more as parts than as a runner (sad, but true). I'd try eBay first for seats etc. though.

Fen's spot on, sounds like you got the old mechanical feed on the gearbox. The clunking noise on the old box you have (depending upon severity) sounds suspiciously like the early stages of an ring and pinion failure to me which normally will write a box off (I've been quoted £400+ for the rebuild of a good working box, and I dread to think of the parts cost if there's anything major wrong).

If it's of any interest I do have the box from a 944S for sale (which I used very sucessfully in my Lux). I could do with the space so will let it go for a good price (much less than i paid for it!) and this will have the electrical output you need.

Best regards,
Peter

How does £100 sound? I think i paid £350 for it if I remember correctly. I only removed it to fit the S2 one.
Best regards,
Peter

Peter, That sounds great.

I have been looking into this problem, and FEN is right (I know nothing about the mechanic of a Porsche) its the earlier box so it is the logical thing to do.

I am collecting the car at the weekend, as i said it does need work mainly tidying it up, the gearbox is the biggest item on the list, but i will assess the other works required and get back to you over the weekend Peter if that is OK, as if there are any other major problems i might sell it on as is.

I think i have found another interior for the car as well from an S2 which would tidy it up a treat as long as i have all the right parts as it has a cream interior and the one i have found is black. So hopefully all goes well i could have a tidy 2.7 944.

How easy is a gearbox change?

Thanks

Tim

Hi Tim,
Good luck with the collection, hope all goes to plan.

Just let me know if and when you want the box, If you need to speak to me over the weekend about it you can reach me on the phone at work on Saturday (my number is available from the web address in my profile) or alternatively drop me a PM.

I've not done a gearbox change myself but the labour has never been that worrying so I can't think its that difficult.

Best regards,
Peter.
