2.7 facelift vs 3.2S non facelift - HELP

Hi,

Looking for a boxster for my mother ([]) and she has a budget of a maximum of about 20k.

Ideally she wants a 3.2S but I have noticed that the facelift 2.7's can now be picked up with low mileage almost inside her budget.

So is the non facelift 3.2 car a better overall car than a facelift 2.7 ???

What changes were made during the facelift to 'improve' the car and how would it compare?

Thanks in advance...

J

I went for the non-facelift 3.2S option. It had Litronics and a few nice options, 18" Carrera's, full blue metropole leather and roof over Seal Grey. Smoked side indicators too.

I may miss the cupholders and the glass rear screen. Apart from doing the little karate chop to the screen, which can be a chore, I think the 'S' is the better option. If not for the brakes alone.

Biggest difference was the glass rear window - for that alone it's worth going for the face lift. 8 BHP increase over the former version and new front and rear PSU's (bumper covers) that, IMHO, do nothing for the looks.

JCB..

I agree with John. I picked up a new model in '02 just before the face-lift and I would have gladly traded a 3.2 engine for a glass rear screen afterward.

The continual chop and the restrictions of when you could drop the top (or not) on a crisp sunny winters day was my biggest issue with the car. Rear demisting wasn't an issue as it had heated mirrors to use on those days.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a 2.7, in fact, there are times that I yearn for the 5 speed gearbox from one, as 3rd and 4th keep pulling forever and there's more work to do in an S.

I'd agree with Tony - if you're on the cusp of the model year, go for the newer one. I think it looks fresher and more modern as well with the colour coded rear lights.

If your money runs to it; try a non-face lift 3.2S and then buy a replacement glass screen hood and clear lenses. I understand that you can hardly tell the difference.

Will your Mum use the extra handling, power, brakes & 6 speed box?
If not then a newer 2.7 may well be a better bet.
Not sure about comparative residuals (the 3.2 will have done proportionally more of it's total depreciation) or if this is a major factor.

That about sums it up.

Whilst the 3.2S is terrific, a newer, lower mileage, nicely spec'd 2.7 could be the best choice.
