2.7 liability or misunderstood?

As most of you will be aware, I'm looking for a car to buy and I'm confused. At the moment, I'm laid up with a slipped disc in my back and can't go to view cars. However, having started this process looking for an S2, I am now far more open minded and am looking for quality ( fsh, body condition etc). A 2.7 has come up. I know that they were produced in fewer numbers, but are they to be avoided, or are they worth a look? I had to pass on looking at baby WUF because of the back, but I am really keen to buy a car. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

The 2.7 is fine. Engine parts are not exactly falling off trees, and in demand to make large capacity turbos.
Then again, if you did have one with a knackered engine, you could bung in a 2.5 no problem.
 
Why would the 2.7 be a 'liability'? Theres a lot of nonsense talked about the 2.7 (usually made up and then repeated on forums), but in reality its water pump costs a bit more and thats about it. With regards to it being 'rare': it was actually built and sold in substantially greater numbers than the 1988 year model!
 
My thought to add would be this , there was never a model of 944 made that was a liability. A well looked after 944 of 'any' varient should serve you very well indeed. Enjoy the search.

Never heard a bad word about a 2.7 Huw, I see many with auto boxes, and massive mileages.

My 2.7 reputedly did 250k on its first engine.

Water pumps are a bit more but valves are unique to the engine and are VERY expensive.

Like the drive though.
 
As XXC says, valves are about £100 each and unique, but how often do you buy valves? And, there's only eight of them.

I guess the important thing is to find out which car you like to drive. There's a lot of difference between the lux, S, S2 and turbo cars, so you do need to think about it and preferably try different cars. At any big gathering there will be owners prepared to take you out and show their cars off, get to one of the events and ask around.
 
Don't buy a 2.7 - they make no more power than a 2.5
Don't buy a 2.5 - a hot hatch goes faster
Don't buy a 16V - they have camshaft problems
Don't buy a Turbo - they blow headgaskets
Don't buy a Cabrio - they have scuttle shake and leak
Don't buy any 944 - their cambelts snap


Ignore ALL of the above about individual models and just buy the best one that you can find within the budget you can afford and you'll be a happy man [:)]

No model is any more a problem than the other, they are all 20+ year old cars that need looking after and all have their liitle issues, but thats what makes them what they are [:D]

As Paul says just buy the best you can in your budget and don't worry about which model it is

In that case it's only four of them then. [:D]

Either way, replacing all the valves on a 2.7 is no more expensive than, say, a clutch or a brake overhaul. As once-in-a-lifetime costs they're not really an issue.

The big thing is always going to be bodywork and paint, more expensive to fix properly than anything mechanical.
 
Thanks. Yes, there seems to be alot of scary stories about all of the above and you could end up buying nothing as a consequence. Must try harder!
 
Hi Huw.
Started looking for an S2, Bought an 87 Turbo. Everthing said before is spot on, good RECENT history and no rust in the expensive areas. And Turbo goes like shhhhhhhhhhhhuger.
Get well soon cos you'll need a strong back for a turbo but worth it.
