2.7 or 3.2S

Hi, another newbie with a question!

Apart from the obvious engine size and BHP increase what other differences are there between a 987 2.7 and 3.2S?

And while I'm quizzing you experts, is a 3.2S worth the extra cash over a 2.7?

Thanks in advance.

2.7 came with alcantara seating, 17" wheels, smaller brakes and a 5 speed gearbox.

3.2S came with 6 speed gearbox, leather faced seats, 18" alloys and bigger brakes with red calipers

Optional extras were pretty much the same whichever model you started with.

Hi there
I can only comment from my very recent buying experience of a 2008 Boxster S Tiptronic, which is that I like the extra power compared to the regular Boxster that I also test drove. Both Boxsters were fantastic cars, however, right now is the best time ever to buy one and the price differential has never been less. Negotiate hard and you will be delighted. (Try Porsche Cambridge and Colchester)
The Boxster S has around 50hp less than my previous car which it replaced (a 2006 Carrera Tiptronic), but I prefer the roadholding and general feel of the car on the road. Also the Tiptronic box works much better on the Boxster S than on the Carrera, with no lag when you put your foot down.

im gonna be really difficult here but point out that u can buy a seriously good 996 cab 3.6 engine for no money. id go for the carrera everytime and u can still buy a cabriolet if thats what u really want

Welcome, why would you want to buy a 996, go for the 987 'S' having had mine for the past 15 months its the best move I've ever made, I would go for the 'S' as the difference in cost at the minute is minimal and there are some bargins on the market

What have underpants to do with any of this? [&:]

Looks like I'm leaning towards an 'S' then. You guys are right, the price difference isn't that much .

Any options that are must haves?

I would recommend the 3.2S every time.

I found the 2.7 underpowered compared to my previous car (M3) but the 3.2 is right up there.

Options are a personal thing but any that have glass rear screens would be worth a bit more.

I'm on my second 2.7. I have freinds with a variety of Porches (911 CS, C2 (996 & 997), 997 C2S, 996 C4S, 996 GT2, 996 GT3, 964 & 993 Turbos, 987 Boxster S and Carrera GTs) and unless they are all extremely polite, they have all said how much they enjoyed driving the little 2.7. I've driven most of the above but always love driving my 2.7. I drove the GT2 and the 2.7 back to back, and after 7 hrs in the former, enjoyed every moment of being back in my car. My 986 2.7 did around 34mpg on long runs and 16mpg on the track. Yes, those other cars are fantastic, and very quick, but persoanlly I'm not a horsepower junky and think 230 - 240bhp is just fine. One of its best features is that all its power is deployable more of the time.
