I am very pleased to say my Gen II 2.9 Boxster is working well!
Almost never smokes on cold start after all my problems, I seem to be on top of it now.

With a relaxed mind I've wondered why Porsche went to the 2.9 for such a short period.
There is very little to find out about this engine and also why it was dropped for the next generation back to 2.7.
With this in mind, the Tippler book on the whole Boxster run of cars came my way for Xmas. The answer must be in there....

Nope, nothing to write about except a few car data sheets. In the book the 2.9 almost does not exist.

Does anyone know any facts about the introduction of this engine and it's short life?
Graham.

Graham,

Sorry I can’t shed any light on your query except to say that the 2.9L 987 Gen2 series engine was non-DFI whereas the 2.7L engine in the 981 series has the benefit of DFI and I think the power outputs are similar.

Good to hear that your engine smoking problems are now over and that you’re enjoying your car. Persistence paid off..!

Jeff

Thank you!
yes, the car is great, it is best when driven with some conviction, and not like a lazy deisel....
maybe because the 2.9 was not directly injected, things changes for emissions?
