2001 25k Boxster Question

I've just bought a 2001 2.7 which has covered 25000 miles from new. The car has been cosseted and looks and drives like a one year old. The only fly in the ointment is, after reading all the info about Intermediate shaft bearings failing (particularly on low mileage cars) and now being scared to start it (!) I am now considering having it replaced on a preventative basis. Has anyone else done this? This is a long term purchase and I don't fancy playing Russian roulette for the next few years.

I live in N Yorks, so there are a few specialists nearby:

RPM
Porschtek
Strasse
Sports and Classic
Hartech

Any thoughts on who might be best able to do this? Sports and Classic actually advertise this service on their website.

Thanks for any help.

I also live in North Yorkshire and have used RPM since I bought my 924 Turbo in July 2007. They have never disappointed with their level of service, advice and quality of their work. Obviously I have not had the type of work done that you are looking at but I would recommend Nick and Andy to anyone.

I wouldn't worry too much about it - yes it happens but not to every car! It's not like I get loads of calls from owners that it's happened to, I've had maybe 2 or 3 in the last 5 or so years.

Hartech have developed a solution, so I'd speak to them first if you were thinking of it.

if it ain't broke why fix it unless you intend to cane the car and skimp on servicing.....

Actually there's plenty of anecdotal evidence that if you cane it you're less likely to suffer an IMS bearing failure. Well, that's my excuse anyway...
