2001 996 v 2002 Facelift 996

Hi
I'm looking at a 2001 996 which is described as "Lapis Blue metallic with full black and savannah soft ruffled hide trim,heated seats,computor,sun-roof,cdr22 stereo,26000 miles only,full service history and immaculate". Nice looking car but I have been advised to try and go for a 2002 > model. I would appreciate any comments as to why a 2002 is a better choice! Thanks

It's OK to go to a 2002 facelift model as long as it's not out of your budget. It was for me, so I went with a pre-facelift 996 and I still think it's a stunning car in every way. [:)]

I'm looking at an 01 996 Tip which does look amazing and it will be the first time I've driven one as I've had a boxster for two years! What's that they say about not buying the first car you look at??

i looked for months to find the right 996. black with black leather, c4 tip. great car but got savage with myself and 9 months later got c4s.
find a car that just pushes all the right buttons man. face lift looks a bit more modern but hey its a porker.[;)]

The one I looked at the other day just didn't do it for me, blacks a great colour for the car. What got to me was the first thing the dealer said was all the things he would do to the car if I purchased ie a bit of paint etc. why don't they do those jobs before people look at the cars!

I had this same scenario when selling my Boxster.

The dilemma is;

1. does the seller leave the car as is and show a genuine car to purchasers, warts and all, and negotiate as necessary, or,

2. 'tart' it up, make it look very pretty and advertise it for top money.

What happens next is that someone comes along and says; "hey, why are there no stone chips on this bonnet, Porsches are susceptible to them you know (!), your car must have been in a smash. Not buying that".

Like life itself, you just can't win.

I faced a similar decision to you and settled for a 2001 car; mainly as it was being offered at such a reasonable price and ticked most boxes. Absolutely no regrets, and besides, it leaves me the opportunity to upgrade! As an aside, I always like to see cars pre-prep, warts and all. Stone chip repair in particular can throw up all sorts of secondary issues and as such would prefer sellers to just leave well alone and for buyers to be sensible in what they should expect to see from a car 5 years old with say 50k on the clock.

That's a good point, I have found a car I'm happy with and it's having a pre purchase insepction on Friday so fingers crossed!
