2002 996 Battery Problem

Hi,

I have a 2002 996 (facelift version) Tiptronic.
The original battery died maybe due to lack of use over winter.
I replaced battery but in the mean time had to use a booster
a few times to start the car.
Since then the dashboard illunination does not work.
It worked intermittantly for a few days and now does
not work at all.
i have tried all fuses in the footwell and all are fine,
The digital readout works but when i put the lights on
the dashboard does not illuminate so i cannot see the
speed/rev counter etc.
I can see the speed on the digital readout so it is
safe to drive.

Can anyone help with any info????

I wonder if the instrument cluster has slipped back into 'transit' (energy-saving) mode? I remember this happening on a Boxster once. Do the interior lights work as normal: i.e. do they come on when you press the unlock button on the remote?
