Colin,

Try double declutching into second from first gear! Engagement is sometimes more difficult when cold due to baulky synchromesh.

Check the cable operation to make sure that nothing's sticking.

The 6 speed in the Boxster S is fairly well know for 2nd gear issues. It feels like it has gone into gear, but pops out when the clutch is released, or it doesn't go into gear and 'crunches'.

This can be due to a worn synchromesh, a badly adjusted gear linkage or, as in my case, a worn out front engine mount. When this fails (it is a common failure, usually around 50-60k miles) the engine/gearbox moves enough to cause an alignment issue. After having mine replaced the 2nd gear issue all but disappeared. I don't remember the last time it did it.

When mine was giving me problems I found a shifting technique that pretty much 'cured' the issue. Try this:

1. To change from 1st to 2nd apply light pressure on the gearstick towards 2nd and maintain the pressure (without knocking it out of 1st and without touching the clutch)
2. Whilst maintaining the pressure depress clutch and allow the gearstick to slide into 2nd.
3. Release the clutch as normal.

This is quite a 'well known' technique for working around the 2nd gear issue. It takes a few goes to get it right, but it quickly becomes second (excuse the pun!) nature and you do it without thinking.

water pipes front and rear
suspension bushes tie arms drop links etc
front and rear ball joints
exhaust bolts
clutch plate failed broken spring
bonnet clips
front subframe tie arms
suspension bolts
upper suspension mounts
coil packs
tps
Not to mention consumables discs pads tyres


 
Mine's just ticked over 50k. Not sure I'm looking forward to its first service under my ownership…
 
When it happened to me at 22k miles I found a new gearbox cured the problem. [:(] Contrary to the marketing messages these cars are shoddy.... but they are rather good fun to drive (in between the time they spend being repaired). Discuss.

when the car is going its a very very good car.
The engine on full chat through proper sports exhaust is glorious.
New coil packs, platinum tipped plugs, design tech air filter and Carnewall exhausts make a lot of difference and more smiles per mile.
Handling is exemplary on all new bushes and cam bolts link etc.
Brakes are superb again on new discs pads etc front and rear.

There is a but, it's now getting ridiculous when I know all the people that work in my local Porsche parts department on first name terms.
They will be sending be a xmas card at this rate.
Every time I pickup a part its usual available off the shelf.
Quite often I ask is this normal and they usually say yes that about the normal time to replace the failed part.
The car is a parts whore! I am hoping that my list of parts changed will not grow anymore !
I can the start enjoying the car.

22000 miles for a gearbox is terrible but I have heard that very fast get away from stand still does cause early demise so I never put full load through the gearbox from stand still.
The tyres just don't brake traction in the warm so the torque shock must be massive on the gearbox.

It is important to share this information so others may be able to avoid the issue.

I have had under body studs for the under tray snap but now I have design a repair nut which hopefully will cure the issue or at least reduce the likely hood.
