2003 Turbo v 2006 S

Hi all,

after previously owning a boxster S and a 993 I am thinking of getting back into Porsche ownership, but need a practical family car which the Cayenne seems to fit the bill nicely. I have a budget of £14k which is not enough to get a facelift model so after doing some research at my budget my choice seems to be an early turbo or late Gen 1 S.

I am aware of the coolant pipe issue on the S, and propshaft bearing on the early Cayennes.

I know in general with Porsches the turbo is usually a stronger built engine for performance purposes, but potential valve weaknesses on the S were resolved on later models. Does anyone know which year the valves were changed on the S?

With more or less the same running costs, I am looking for advice of whether one model is better than the other. Presuming mileage condition etc are the same, its purely an age related question. I look forward to hearing your experiences as I am sure others have gone through the same decision making process, with hindsight was it the right choice?

Many thanks

Hi 70sthrowback,

Have checked out the insurance differences yet? If not make that first port of call.

If your buying private you will save a huge amount over dealer prices giving you lots of extra ££ just in case. Maybe you might find a face lifted one if patient....Ive seen late face lifted 06 for less than 10/14k (maybe a gamble I know - but some sellers are desperate to get rid)

Gen 1's were also double dipped when galvanized to [sm=spanner2.gif]

Had CS a year and a half now and its been great and plenty fast enough for the road, in that time i've changed both rear hinges and struts in tail gate added new tyres all round and popped in a new battery. As well as adding a few small mods/upgrades to suite my taste.

Good luck with the search!!

Thanks for the reply FP

just checked the insurance as had not thought of that, no difference in the price so thats good.

I had been watching the online ads and have not seen a facelift model for less than £16k. There is one on autotrader now, but its done 100k miles which is way too high for my liking. I need to get one in the next 3-4 weeks, so unfortunately I don't have the benefit of sitting and waiting.

Quick Q, and apologies for my stupidity. Why did Gen 1's double dip?

I personally used to think 100k miles was way too much also like yourself. however my last two motors had big V8 engines and were over this number - never had a problem with either. Remember they are large output engine so when cruising at motorway speeds they are just "ticking" over. So its no longer an issue for me....just check history/DVLA web site MOT doc etc to verify all numbers correlate.

you have probably seen the link below, but if not ENJOY its a great site for all things Cayenne!!

This should keep you busy for 10 mins....

The body work on the early 03 cars were anti rust proofed buy twice over galvanizing the body panels. My Guess is as a complete new offering from Porsche at that time they were making sure it lasted! I believe the 03 cars were better than the 04/05 cars.

Hope that helps

Cheers

that is very interesting indeed. I wasn't aware of the galvanising on the 2003 models, that definitely changes my view. As for the mileage I think my concern is more about resale value than the car itself. Worth thinking about though.

I have been on rennlist but many thanks for taking the time to post the links I will read them all.

Thanks again really appreciated

Had my 04 model Cayenne Turbo for over a year now, its the best family wagon we have had and we have had a few. (Audi rs2, merc amg, Audi rs6, BMW X5 etc etc) Dipped a tow in the water to try out a Turbo Cayenne without huge outlay. I would say as long as you can live with the fuel bills go for it. Could sure be tempted with a new model, but will wait till they plummet in value too.

Took it on the Gairloch weekend just last week, first time I have really peddled it around the twistess. Kept up with the rest of the group no probs ;-) amazing how easy it was to keep up with 911/Boxsters/Caymans through the bends as well as along the straights and we were 4 up. Hugely entertaining machine and was still returning 15-17 mpg.

I am looking at a couple this week, so fingers crossed at least one of them matches up to their advert. If so I will definitely be owning one by next week.

My 06 MY "S" is now on 120k miles from new and is now the family bus,it does regular runs to Cornwall and school run, touch wood it never misses a beat, except when it needs a new coil,as it is still just in extended warranty they only replace one coil at a time. But i dont think its worth selling as it is immaculate and reliable but worth very little.
No body problems so far...

well I got one... been advertised on Pistonheads for a couple of months which I cannot understand as I had missed out of 2 others this week, so good ones are going. I think the interior isn't to everyones taste ( a two tone beige type of thing) but it doesn't bother me and to be frank from a practical point of view it will show the dirt a lot less and black or grey leather. This I know from experience having 2 young kids.

The advert has gone now so I don't have any pics but its an 03 Turbo with 38k and fsh. i paid £11k for it in a private sale and am pretty pleased as long as nothing goes wrong :) Just need to figure out the PCM and all the other buttons now so thats my bank holiday sorted.

and the other

So far so good, apart from some bad luck. In the 3 weeks I have owned I have had an unrepairable puncture and yesterday a damaged alloy from a huge pothole on a B road after been diverted following a closed road due to an accident.

However that aside which could happen to anyone, I am really enjoying the car. I cannot believe how rapid it is, as quick as my 993 and very practical. A day out at the coast with 2 children a pushchair and all the rest. Not something I could have done in a 993! I do miss the flat 6 engine note, but the rest of the family do not, so the quiet Cayenne is a thumbs up in that respect. Quite refined really, well until the foot hits the floor.

Had all the wheels balanced which made a huge difference to the road feel, just need the luck to change now so I can enjoy having it for more than a week without something happening.
