2006 Cayman 987.1 Audio/ ICE Upgrade

I have a fairly early 987.1 Cayman with Porsche CDR24 audio and, I believe, the Porsche Sound Package option and no controls on the steering wheel.

There is what I think is an amplifier in the front compartment behind the tyre repair cover.

I do not understand what PCM 2.0/ 2.1/ 3.0 etc means but would like to upgrade the standard head unit to give me more functionality.

Basic requirements would be:

DAB radio as some of my preferred stations are now only on DAB
Handsfree mobile telephone usage
Satnav display via the phone - my daily is a Polo GTI which does not have satnav but has Apple CarPlay which uses the Google maps on the mobile phone which is connected via a USB cable.
My preference would be a wireless connection, if that is available.

I would like something that looks fairly restrained - I don't want fancy lights, buttons and gizmos - and that will fit in with the silver/grey fascia trim material.

I am not looking for high-end audio quality, just to be able to get some music and information on the move.

I would prefer installation by someone who knows what they are doing and am based in West Central Scotland

Can anyone provide any pointers on suitable hardware and possible installer recommendations?

Many thanks.

Alastair

I also have a Cayman 987.1 with a similar spec to yours (CDR-24, Sound Package Plus, amp in the front and no steering wheel controls).

I replaced it with a 2nd hand Dynavin N6 which I bought from another club member. The N6 facia trim is identical in colour to the rest of the trim (for heater controls etc) in the car.

You might be able to get one 2nd hand one from Ebay. It doesn't have DAB but it can do Bluetooth streaming so you can stream digital radio from your phone. It also has a phone kit and satnav built in. The latest model is the N7 but that will cost more.

It's pretty easy to remove the old unit and put the new one in. I did the replacement myself after watching a couple of YouTube videos. Just need an allen key and a torx screwdriver set to remove some screws and bolts. The new unit comes with a wiring harness that plugs into the existing wiring loom. It's pretty straightforward to work out where each connector goes.

If you had a Bose stereo then you would need a different wiring harness (assume you don't as you said you had SPP fitted). The N6 came with an extra harness for Bose stereos.

The only thing I noticed after replacing the CDR-24 was that the radio station / cd track no longer appeared in the dash display (where the MPG / average speed is displayed). There is a small cable that plugs into the OEM unit but which couldn't go into the N6 unit.

Hope this help, if you need anymore info let me know. Cheers, Paul

Thanks for the info - I’ll look into availability and do a bit more research when I get back from my Skye road trip.
