2007 987 Boxster S or Boxster 2.7?

Hi, I'm in the very luck position where I own a 997.2 Carrera S (PDK) however I am looking to buy a 987 Boxster as I want a manual car to play with too. I used to have a 987 3.4 Tiptronic. Will I regret getting a Boxster over a Boxster S as it's cheaper as one I've found is the correct spec I like (black/lobster claw etc)? Thank you for your thoughts in advance.

As a seasoned Porsche owner who’s owned a Gen1 Boxster S you’ll be very familiar with the potential (overplayed?) pitfalls associated with the engine in those cars, although I believe that bore scoring with the 2.7L engine is very rare.

You’ll be very familiar with the performance of the 3.4L car and so will be in an excellent position to decide whether or not that of the smaller engined car meets your needs, but I’m sure that it will be more than adequate if primarily it’s for roof-down cruising. Plus you’ll probably need to "stir the stick” more actively to make rapid progress, which is one of the reasons for you wanting the more engaging manual ‘box. [;)]

Many thanks Jeff; yes, it's the gear changing I'm missing with PDK 911 so pleased to hear a 2.7 would give me that fun. Thanks for your thoughts.

Tom, I get the impression that the 2.7L cars - both Boxster and Cayman - generally are of a lower spec than the S versions, so if you’ve found one which ticks all your boxes it sounds ideal, subject to the usual checks.

A good friend of mine bought a manual 2.9 Cayman several years ago with the intention of upgrading to the S - that never happened and she is a "driver" having had a 997C4S, a brand new 987.2 Boxster S and a 911T (which she would love to trace and buy back). If it's the spec you like get it and have some fun in the sun!
 
Tom, I think the 2.7 may have a 5 speed gearbox, so keep that in mind too. I love the extra torque that my 3.2 gives me which makes it feel very powerful from the get go without having to Rev it all the time.
