Hi
not normally around this forum, but a friend is looking to purchase a 2007 3.4 boxster S.

he is worried about RMS issues is it still a problem on this model year? anything I should advise on?

thanks in advance

Ken,

I believe that Porsche updated the RMS/IMS bearing a number of times and I would have thought that the later cars, such as the one at which your friend is looking, will be less affected by these issues. That said, I think that there's someone posting on this forum with an '07 car who has had some problems, so it can still happen. However, it's probable that the whole thing is somewhat overplayed owing to the "internet effect".

At a recent Club event at Cambridge PC, the concensus from the technicians was that they couldn't recall when they'd last encounted RMS/IMS issues on any 911s or Boxsters. They said that if there's just oil misting present at the crankcase/bellhousing joint it's best left alone, but if oil is beading then it's time for action.

Interesting to note that in a Class Action, Porsche Cars North America has just agreed to reimburse current and prior 2001 through 2005 Porsche 911 and Boxter owners and lessees for out-of-pocket money spent on IMS engine failure repairs. Unfortunatley, I think that we'd have to see the proverbial pigs flying before a similar thing would happen here.

I had the typical "RMS" weep on my Cayman. In fact, it was the IMS mounting post seal, which presents in exactly the same way as a RMS leak. The RMS had already been changed at about 3 years of age. It was at about 55,000 miles when I had it done, so took the opportunity to have a new clutch at the same time. The old one looked hardly worn, so was probably a waste of money, but I went ahead with it anyway.

Either way, it shouldn't be a deal breaker. The worst you get is the odd drip. Mine didn't even do that - it just dampened the casing a bit, but being a fussy so-and-so I had it done.
