2008 Cannonball 8000

I'm considering signing up for the Cannonball 8000 and was hoping that somebody in the forum had either done it before or is considering it, and knows more than I do.... For those that don't know, its driving and partying for three nights while during the days driving from city to city. (London, Cologne, Vienna & Venice...)

I saw the ad in Octobers issue of Porsche Post.. (Page 40) Any stories/experiences? Good or Bad.!!!

I entered the Cannonball 2007 event and paid the 1st & 2nd installment - then the couple got killed (fatal RTA) on the Gumball in Macedonia. This put a whole new light on the event as far as I could see. Cannonball office issued a whole new set of Terms & Conditions with lots of no come back / no blame, unforeseen circumstances, exclusion clauses to cover their asses.
Then the European Police Federation started making noises about fining people and consficating cars and then German Police declared it as an illegal road race.
With that and too much work, I pulled the plug and lost my dosh. I felt totally vindicated though when I read the newspapers on the event weekend plus all the negative reports and blogs on the Cannonball website. The first 20 cars that crossed into Germany got impounded and the drivers a €2000 fine - great I was to have been car 10!
Then there was the insurance issue - my broker said that 'it should be OK' - but the Cannonball office were pushing entrants to take out additional policies just in case - another £500 for 3rd Party only - fully comp starting at 10% of the value of the car!
The cost of next years event seems astronomical at £6500 + VAT and will it actually happen, far better I think going to the 'ring on one of the Driving Adventure trips. Just my thoughts

Good decision Graham,

As a respected car club, upholding the reputation of our cars and community, we should not be supporting these events which make a mockery of laws of the lands they drive through (while officially claiming to be "within the law").

If we are not careful they will be the cause of the outlawing of normal club runs.

That was one of the concerns when the advertising and magazine was outsourced, we were assured that it would not change [&:]

It does strike me as strange that Porsche Post would allow a full page advert, if it knew it was illegal.. The initial cost I'm happy with, but now knowing that this comes with strings attached (i.e. potential fines and extra insurance), I think I'll save my money and go on the Le Mans 2008 plus a couple of other Porsche Club organised events.

Thanks for all your thoughts. (That was just the sort of information I was after). Forum's Great.!!!

I thought about the Cannonball last year, but decided against it after seeing a TV program on one of their tours, which hilighted all of the above problems...

As an alternative try: www.driving-adventures.co.uk

Darren and Graham who run the company provide excellent holidays: superb routes, good hotels with secure parking, and a strickly non race atmosphere....

I have been on two of their tours this year, French Riviera, Scotland and I am booked again for the Riviera again next year.

Good decision Paul.
I think the board should approach Hine Marketing regarding unsuitable advertising in OUR magazine.

I don't think the event has officially been declared illegal, so the advert would have been taken in good faith as any other..
Leman is excellent and a petrolheads delight...
Plenty of plans as you would have seen for the Register to go abroad next year..

As unfair as sweeping generalisations tend to be, I think the I saw on this forum, the phrase "Trust Fund Tarquin" used to describe the majority of people who go on these rallies.

Doesn't seem that wide of the mark.
