2013 Boxster 981 PCM problems

Good morning, I have an issue with my PCM which turns off then back on every few minutes. Also it will no longer connect to my iPod.
I have consulted my local Porsche Specialist who has advised me that this a well known problem. He suggested that I take my car to the local Porsche Centre and request a software update which has a 50/50 chance of resolving the issue. If not a new PCM will be required. I have read on the web that this may be a ‘campaign’ issue and therefore may be replaced free of charge. My Porsche specialist suggested that I negotiate as the PC may do something as a gesture of good faith. My car is booked into the local PC in January.
The specialist also mentioned that he is aware that in the US it is possible to buy a replacement hard drive only which will reduce the repair cost to £100’s rather than the £1,000’s a complete PCM will cost. He is prepared to attempt this but cannot guarantee success as he has not done this before.
I am wondering if any club member has experience of negotiating with a PC on this issue and also the US hard drive fix.

There is a technical bulletin which covers this. It covers 981, 991, Panamera, Macan and Cayenne models 2012-2015 with PCM3.1 systems. It suggests there are two things that should be done.

1) Reset the database using files downloaded from the Porsche PPN on a USB stick, after activating it with the PIWIS tester.
2) Update the system software using an update DVD in the head unit. (This is the same disk as when doing map updates).

If you would like to try doing the sotware update yourself, I have the correct DVD. Of course, your system may have been updated in the past, in which case it probably wouldn't do the trick, but if your unit is still running the original system software then it would definitely be worth a try. You can check the version by pressing INFO and SOURCE at the same time. The latest version for a level 3.xx system is 3.43, and for a level 4.xx system is 4.76.

If you would like the technical bulletin and/or DVD, drop me a PM with your email address.

Hello Richard, thank you for your reply.

I have checked my system as you have suggested, it reads System Version V4.52 and PCM 3.1

I would very much appreciate the technical bulletin and DVD.

my email address is telfordm9@gmail.com.

thank you

Michael

Just a note for others. I sent David the bulletin, but I think I jumped the gun slightly. In the document, it says that the database reset should be done before the software is updated. If the system was to reboot during the update it could leave the system stuck at the "Emergency Update” screen.

Unfortunately I don’t have the database reset tool, so I think it would be safer to wait for the PC to do it.
