Anyone got any clues what this might be? Sounds like a sewing machine! - listen to audio file in the dropbox link below
recording 2 is from the side pod and recording 3 is from inside the cab

60 min drive out yesterday, 30 mins in it started, initially thought something in cab rattling or the air con. Turned air con and blowers off, still there and noise was coming from behind drivers seat (engine bay) and very loud out of drivers side side-pod (air intake) - which is where the recording was taken from.
Sent to OPC and awaiting their views too.
Not driving until they've come back and think it might be a call to Porsche Assist to come and pick it up and take it to Aberdeen :(

Thanks, Colin

I listened to your recordings, to me it sounded as though the 'rattle' sound was at a constant frequency and didn't vary with the engine revs. If that is the case I'd wonder whether it is the cooling fan making the noise which may explain why it occurred after 30 minutes when the engine was up to temperature.

I'll wait with anticipation to hear what the OPC says.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago.

As has previously been mentioned noise doesn't change when engine is revved so I also think it's associated with the engine bay extractor fan, in my case it was as simple as a leaf had been drawn into the fan and was stuck.

The OPC cleared it within 2 minutes so I think it's a known problem at this time of year. They suggested I try using a vacuum cleaner if it occurs again.

I had exactly the same problem - trapped Autumn leaf ratting against extractor fan blades. Nottingham PC fixed in minutes. I've since bought my first and only purchase from 'Lakeland' - a pair of long, wooden tweezers to extract debris myself should it happen again.

thanks guys, I tried to reach in and clear any debris, couldn't find anything but guess that could be the case.

It's on its way to OPC Aberdeen now so I'll confirm when I get the report from them. Are there any grills that can be fitted (without impacting warranty) to stop 'stuff' getting in the pods?

Zunsport do make grilles for the side intakes of the 981 and as for warranty you need to discuss with the local OPC as to their attitude since it does differ, also some fit them and remove any time the car is going into the OPC you then just need to know how to remove them and tuck them out of sight such as inside a bag in the boot.

If you decide to get the Zunsport grilles note that they do give a club discount, it is available on the Cayman forum at the top of the main discussion area.

update - call from OPC to confirm large leaf stuck in side pod fan was the culprit - I need to get to Lakeland and buy some of PaulJ's wooden tweezers for future home remedy ;)

Car back in time for Xmas :)
