220t emmission setting

I just got back from the MOT and have failed test on emmisions being slightly over[:eek:]

is it an easy fix to reduce CO output on the 220 turbo

My car is totally standard apart from KN panel filter replacing the original

Wil, the only way I could get my old Lux low enough for the MOT was to get a new AFM as it had worn out (it ran so rich that between gear changes it would spit a 3-4' flame out the back). But you could try the old tricks of fresh oil change.
How far over was it?
 
Idle or under load? There's an idle mixture adjustment screw, and if it's under load it sounds like you need more boost [8D]
 
Only marginal apparantley so some Forte cleaner added tonight on almost empty tank and driven 10 miles I will put a few litres in tomorrow before I put the usual 1/2 tank in to make sure it has been flushed correctly its booked back in tomorrow..The tester was quite helpful in that he suggested taking it out to warm up and retest the emmisions thats how close it is and as we agreed this the next test arrived so going back first thng tomorrow, hopefully the cleaner has done its job

I will look at that it is at idle I think so maybe needs adjustment on the other hand I did the holding at 3-4 k revs for him and held it at 3500 steady also not looked at the printout maybe better if it is held higher in the RPM to induce more boost ??

If pressed I'd have to say the following is a tall tale... [;)]

When my MX5 turbo (which was a K-plate so needed to meet the more stringent emissions from Aug 1993 but had "misplaced" its cat) needed an MoT the tester may have got its exhaust pipe confused with that of a Mondeo that happened to be running next to it. Easy mistake to make (perhaps the tester was black/red colour blind?) and nobody realised until it was too late to correct it [8D]. I'm sure it didn't make any great difference to the outcome of the test anyway [:D].

I guess statically at those revs boost isn't going to make a difference. I wasn't sure how they test emissions in the MoT these days. You might be bale to introduce an air leak temporarily as a quick fix. I know someone who used one of those "economy" devices which just bleed a little extra air into the manifold and create an annoying whistle (Ecotek?) to get his car through MoT each year then took it off again.

Wil, even if it gets an MOT tomorrow, you should get it checked out as the limit for our age of cars is on the generous side, you dont want to be bore washing.
 
There is an adjustment on the AFM I think I needed a ball headed allen key to adjust it, its in one corner and allows are to bleed past the barn door. A good thrashing will probably sort it, get it well warmed and take it up to the red line and hold it close for a few seconds. Strangely an exhaust leak will also make it worse, the late cars have a diagnostic sniffer in the exhaust with a rubber cap, when mine split it pushed the emmisions up to fail levels and I only found it by accident.

Well mine is well inside all of the limits so it is possible - though my AFM is only a couple of years or so old. You can adjust the mixture (an allen screw on top of the AFM) however before adjusting you really need to disable the Idle Stabalisation Valve by making up a jumper for the plug behind the passenger strut tower (round plug about an inch in dia). Details are in the workshop manual. As Tony said to adjust the mixture you are adjusting the position of the barn door at idle so by altering the mixture screw the ISV will be trying to compensate to maintain idle RPM and you'll end up chasing your tail.
 
Tut tut tut naughty people on here with their misuse of inferior automobiles, I don't know what is the world coming to having to cheat a plain stupid MOT thingy.
 
just to Update !!

MOT Passed today [;)]

and replaced one rear Brake pipe then told me once it was off it would have been ok[:mad:] not has bad as he thought only surface pitted

Nothing to the car at all
Porsche Euro Car Specialists suggested a Forte fuel flush to clean through injectors and fuel system[8|] Very helpfull guys highly recommend them
the tank was almost on reserve and this morning the fuel light came on so put 10 litres and left it for retest at the test centre I use local to my work

Fail was 4.14% with a max of 3.50
pass was 2.89% so quite a difference here

in history file 2005 they were at 4.245% so it has been high in previous years
